One Couple's Unique Journey: Meet Ari & Des
“[Honeymoon Israel] has been an opportunity to rediscover my religion as an adult and see it anew through my wife’s eyes. For both of us, learning and building a Jewish community together has strengthened our bond, allowing us to learn more about ourselves and each other and build connections with our community.”
Because of their diverse backgrounds, Ari & Des have always sought a deeper, shared religious understanding from their individual experiences. In 2017, they joined 19 other couples on Honeymoon Israel, an immersive, nine-day Israel travel experience for locally-based couples that have at least one Jewish partner. Honeymoon Israel is made possible for couples in Greater Washington in partnership with The Jewish Federation and Sixth & I. Registration for Honeymoon Israel’s 2019 trips opens May 15.

Young Leaders from Greater Washington Visit Jewish Communities in Morocco and Spain
“I walked in to a synagogue in the middle of Madrid with 140 of North America’s most dedicated young Jewish philanthropists as part of our trip to Morocco and Spain. None of us knew another soul there. None of us knew any of their customs. Most of us couldn’t even converse with the congregants. We were strangers in a strange land. And then the Rabbi started…yitgadal v’yitgadash shmeah rabah. May His great Name grow exalted and sanctified. And in an instant we were no longer strangers. With the simple recitation of one of our People's oldest prayers we instantly became members of a Kehilla – a community – stitched together by a common goal to prepare for that week's Sabbath – as we all said together, ‘amen.’” – Brian Ashin
In April, several members of Greater Washington’s Jewish community had the opportunity to participate in The Jewish Federations of North America’s National Young Leadership Cabinet Study Mission to Morocco and Spain, co-chaired by Brian Ashin. The mission enables young leaders from across North America to truly experience the diversity of Jewish communities abroad, see Federation programs at work and engage with the people we impact.
