Dear Colleagues,
Residence halls will be opening for first-year students Wednesday, Aug. 18, and for sophomores Thursday, Aug. 19. We look forward to welcoming more than 2,000 students and their families to campus during these two days. Arrival times will be staggered, but we expect there to be a large number of cars and people on campus during this time.
Traffic will be congested on and around campus on the 18th and 19th. West Street, in particular, may be difficult to travel at times. Anyone trying to access campus from West Street will be directed to the entrance by the Maintenance Operations Center (MOC). Lower Ravine Parkway will be closed to all traffic, except for local residents. The East Street/Bugbee Road entrance will remain open as usual.
University Police, in conjunction with others across campus, have worked to address congestion issues and traffic flow for move-in days. There will be uniformed police officers at each entrance to campus directing traffic. Please print and have this employee sign ready and visible in your car so the officers can properly direct you.
Please avoid the following lots as they will be utilized by families on move-in day:
- Lots 49 – 63 (all lots along East Dormitory Drive)
- the large parking area between the Field House and MOC (Lots 10 – 14)
- Lot 8 across from Fine Arts
- Lot 16 in front of Hunt Union
- Lots 65 – 68 (all lots along South Dormitory Drive)
- Lot 45 in front of Hays Hall
- Lots 40, 41 and 44 surrounding Hulbert Hall.
Please park in the following lots:
- Lot 15 behind the Field House
- Lots 4 and 7 in front of Netzer
- Lot 38 behind Higgins Hall
- Lot 79 by the tennis courts
- Lot 46 behind the Hunt Union
- Lots 74, 75, and 76 near Bugbee Hall
The Oneonta Public Transit bus service to campus will be reduced for Aug. 18-19 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. The only bus stop on campus those days will be a temporary stop at the parking lot behind Hunt Union (on Blodgett Drive), and buses will run every half hour. Normal bus service and traffic patterns will resume at 6 p.m.
New transfer students will arrive Friday, Aug. 20, and continuing students are able to move in during the weekend of Aug. 21-22. We do not expect the traffic volume to be as large during transfer and continuing student move-in.
There are several different volunteer opportunities available to faculty and staff to get involved in welcoming students back to campus. Please contact Monica Grau or Laura Lincoln if you’d like to volunteer on the 18th and/or 19th. We hope you will join us in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere as students arrive to campus this year.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Amanda Finch, Associate Vice President for Student Development
William Henn, Acting Chief, University Police
