The CASA Connection

Message from the Executive Director

Hello Friends of CASA,

August has been a very busy month for DuPage CASA!

I had the opportunity to participate as a volunteer at the Wheaton Brew Fest for the first time.  I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support we received, with more than 100 friends of CASA volunteering!  Our sincerest gratitude to the Wheaton Park District for your remarkable partnership, to members of the community who attended the event and to all of our generous CASA volunteers!  It was wonderful to see all of you in person for this delightful community event!

We hosted a Back-to-School event where we shared donated books and school supplies with our advocates to distribute to the children currently in foster care in DuPage County.  We were fortunate to receive many donations and we are grateful to all of our community partners for donating much needed school supplies.  I also enjoyed meeting many of our advocates as they shared stories about the children they are currently supporting.

We are in full planning mode for our annual gala on Saturday, October 2nd.  We have 15 committee members hard at work to help make this event a success.  Please scroll down to click on the registration link and be prepared to envelop yourself in our whimsical Mad Hatter theme where "Nothing is Impossible."  We selected this quote from the story, because we have learned from the children supported by CASA, that Nothing is Impossible.  With the help of their advocates, we have seen them exceed expectations!

Thank you for always being there for abused, neglected and vulnerable children in DuPage County.  Just as our advocates speak for these children, this community speaks for CASA through your unwavering support!

Warm regards,

Mad Hatter Gala on October 2!

Advocates Who Inspire

CASA DuPage is pleased to introduce you to
 Bob Steffen
one of our extraordinary Advocates

Bob Steffen is an extraordinary advocate who has been appointed to foster care and guardianship cases.  Two of Bob’s recent cases involved teenagers with one parent, who were living with a grandmother.  In both cases, the grandmothers did not get along with the parent, and contested for guardianship.

Bob was able to connect all parties and get them to come to agreements without the need for a court trial.  Advocate Supervisors say Bob has a unique way of communicating with all parties involved. “Everyone opens up to Bob, because he can look beyond all conflict and encourage dialogue to resolve issues."  Bob has seen many different types of families and consistently treats everyone with respect—which is why family members are willing to open up to him.  Bob has a very welcoming and non-threatening presence and he communicates well, with a lighthearted sense of humor.

During every case and even after cases are closed, Bob will check up on the children involved, making sure they are healthy, they have food and clothes, are doing well in school, and have everything they need.  Bob has been successful in working with troubled youth who were struggling in school.  His positive influence has helped to transform and motivate these students.

Bob will tell you, “Each situation is as varied as the people involved with it.  I always keep the kids’ safety and well-being in mind, but that involves a lot of things…schools, parents (who probably have not been the greatest parents), family members (who won’t speak to one another), extended family members, and more.”  Bob says the reason he continues to be a CASA volunteer advocate is because he’s helping kids and that’s all that matters.

Thank you, Bob, for being a CASA Volunteer Advocate who inspires us!

Community donates supplies for CASA Back to School Event

Our sincerest thanks to all who donated items for children as they prepare to go back to school.  CASA advocates joined us on Friday, August 13th at an outdoor back-to-school event, where they shopped for books, backpacks, supplies, personal items and gift cards.  We enjoyed seeing you and we are thrilled to have these donated items to distribute to children as they head back to school!

If you would like to support the vulnerable children served by CASA, one thing that we can always use are gift cards for advocates to purchase items the children need throughout the year.  Please contact us for more information!

Thank You Brew Fest Volunteers!

CASA of DuPage County
thanks all of the amazing volunteers who helped setup, check-in, pour beer, and more on Saturday, August 7th at Memorial Park in Wheaton.

As one of the benficiaries of the Wheaton Brew Fest, all of us here at CASA of DuPage County express our deep appreciation to the Wheaton Park District and their wonderful staff for their hard work to make this event a success.  We are truly grateful for our partnership!

If you were unable to make it this year and are interested in participating next year, please contact Vicki Shaw at vicki@dupagecounty.org to be added to the volunteer list for the 2022 event.
