A fascinating new book by A. Townsend Peterson chronicles the transformation on the plains of Kansas and western Colorado using repeat photography — contemporary re-creations of 1870s photos — to reveal startling changes to the landscape.
While his usually focuses his research on the geography of biodiversity, tropical ornithology and systematics, distributional ecology and disease-transmission risk mapping, his new book, “One Hundred and Fifty Years of Change on the Great Plains,” is a bit different. Read the full article.

Navigating the Winds of Change: Examining Energy Transition Regulations in KS
Friday, Sept. 6, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Watson Library, 3 West Reading Room
Few people outwardly oppose wind and solar developments in principle. But, the actuality of planning, permitting, and bringing a wind or solar generating facility often generates controversy, sometimes pitting long-term allies against each other.
This presentation shares ongoing work examining the transition to just and green energy future. We will discuss creation of a new public-facing Kansas Energy Transition Atlas, which uses GIS to consolidate and map the wind regulations for all 105 Kansas counties. We also will discuss our analysis of the patterns of county regulations, which range from ordinances that ban wind developments to ordinances that seek to incentivize wind developments. Details and registration.
Presenters:
Ward Lyles, Associate Professor, School of Public Affairs & Administration | Director, Center for Compassionate & Sustainable Communities
Ian Njuguna, Graduate Student & Research Assistant, Urban Planning
