Spring Start SpotlightEach month during your gap semester, we will feature one of our outstanding students who began LS as a Spring Start. This month, we are featuring another of our amazing LS Student Leaders, Aijing Lu. Read Aijing's thoughts below:
十一月快乐! Happy November! How’s everyone doing halfway through your gap semester? I’m Aijing Lu, a senior majoring in Art History and Economics. Like the voices featured in past newsletters and all of you, I’m a spring starter too.
Three years ago, I was exactly where you are now. To keep myself busy during my gap semester, I worked nearly every corner of the creative world back home in Shanghai, jumping from galleries to fashion and media. But there’s one experience that’s stayed with me, and I can’t think of a better time to share it.
It was November 2022 (exactly three years ago), when I interned at a boutique gallery in Shanghai. My main responsibility? Translating and archiving works by Luc Tuymans from the Venice Architectur Biennale, converting exhibition materials from English to Chinese. At the time, he felt like one of those distant art-world legends, like Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, Xu Bing, or Tyeb Mehta. Someone you admire from afar but never imagine stepping anywhere near thei orbit. But sometimes, life brings things full circle in the most unexpected ways.
A year into the LS Core, that experience before college started pushed me to make the decision to redefine my academic path and declare Art History as my second major. I joined student clubs, served on e-boards, and followed the curiosity that started with one quiet November in a gallery office. Fast forward
to today: we have the luck to host a senior partner from David Zwirner, the gallery that has represented Luc Tuymans since 1994 and played a key role in supporting his international career, for an exclusive talk at NYU. And Liberal Studies helped make it happen. Even though I’ve long “transitioned” to CAS, LS staff has continued to support me both with the logistics and trust to bring this to life.
A gap semester might just be that moment that leads you to what truly moves you. A place like LS and NYU can really amplify whatever it is you’re dreaming of. But it all starts with you taking that first step, and trust where it takes you.
See you in a moment. 马上见!
