The calendar has turned to September. You can feel the chill in the air some mornings. Our campus has lots of activity, some of it is the construction and some of it is due to the teachers and clinicians who are coming into their classrooms/offices to provide remote instruction and support.
Our first day of remote instruction was Tuesday, September 8, 2020. It was a highly unusual, difficult transition for all of our students to begin a new school year on a remote platform. Our Vanguard School employees are working diligently to be as creative and engaging as possible. We all recognize that remote instruction is difficult for our kids. We look forward to in-person instruction starting in the safest environment we can create. And yet, even when we open for in-person instruction, there will be no guarantees the virus will not find its way onto our campus.
Allow me to share, generally, our current efforts to offer in-person instruction. Our goal is to offer a hybrid model of instruction by the end of October. The goal date of the end of October is approximately 2 weeks sooner than the November 9 date we scheduled for earlier this summer. However, the end of October remains a goal, not a solid date. We plan to have every detail in place no later than October 19, 2020. We will use that week to determine if the virus data will support a hybrid re-opening or whether we need to postpone the re-opening date. If all is well the week of October 19, we will send all stakeholders an email confirming our intention to offer in-person instruction effective October 26, 2020. We will have 50% of the students and staff on campus Mondays and Tuesdays and the other 50% of the students and staff on campus Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays will be a remote instruction/remote workday as we will use Wednesdays to thoroughly disinfect the campus. This is the plan as of this writing. We have all learned that this complex virus has a mind of its own and we will continue to base our decisions on public health guidelines and recommendations. Still, we are moving ahead with this goal in mind and expect to do everything we can to welcome students and staff back on October 26, 2020.
Our safety enhancement construction project is nearing completion. We are excited to get this project done, for the most part, before any students are projected to return. A campus full of students and staff will be a welcome sight. We are motivated to provide some sense of a new normal here on the VFES campus by the end of October. I know many of you reading this share my excitement.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We often post fun updates of our students, adult participants and our staff. I hope everyone is enjoying a healthy, safe Fall. Thank you for your ongoing support during this challenging time.
All my best,
