Important Update from the School Nurse about the Recent Gastrointestinal Virus
In the last few weeks, Elysian, as well as other schools in the surrounding areas, have had a number of students and staff impacted by a gastrointestinal “bug.” The school has been proactive in trying to contain the spread of the virus.  Gastroenteritis (the medical term for the “stomach bug”), is generally not serious. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and/or diarrhea.   Most people recover in 1-4 days.  Preventing dehydration with replacement fluids is extremely important.  Parents and guardians are urged to contact their child's primary health care providers with any concerns. Students and staff experiencing symptoms, have been advised to remain home for 48 hours to prevent further spread of the virus to the school community.
Because the illness is most often spread from person to person, frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is the best method of prevention. I have gone over hand washing procedures with the students.  Our cleaning staff has also been proactive in sanitizing classrooms, bathrooms and common areas.  Children are encouraged to bring in water bottles and refrain from using the water fountains.  The school has purchased cups for students to use at the water fountain if they don't have their own water bottle.
If there are any questions or concerns about this or any other health issue or policy please address your questions to me.  I am in school Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 3:00 and can be reached through the main office.
Sincerely,
Diane DeSombre RN
