The Importance of Touring Colleges

When it comes to higher education for students with intellectual disabilities, Jennifer Dena, Elevate Coordinator at Arapahoe Community College reminds us, “Students in Colorado have a choice when deciding where they’d like to attend college.” As of now, three options exist in Colorado: GOAL at the University of Northern Colorado, Elevate at Arapahoe Community College, and Inclusive Services at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Inclusive Higher Education is an individualized approach to education and inclusion in college for students with intellectual disabilities. These are individuals who have either traditionally not been able to meet the standard admissions criteria for college, or require additional supports in order to be successful in college. Through pathways established by the Inclusive Higher Education Act, students enroll in college, take classes, and participate in campus life, while receiving accommodations, modifications, social and career supports.
So, how do you find the right school for you? College tours are a great option!

Jennifer explains, “It is so important and worthwhile to explore different schools, because we each offer different programs and services.  By visiting campus, you have the opportunity to ask questions and decide if the college is a good fit for you and a place you can see yourself growing in the future.”
Aaron, a student who will begin at the University of Northern Colorado this fall, looked at UNC and UCCS. We asked him to share his input on touring colleges. Aaron’s advice to prospective students is, “You have to just be around and see how it fits you. And you just have to make the right choice.”
Finally, a parent shares her family’s recent experience with college tours. “It was such a fun day for our family to take our youngest on a college visit, just like we took his brother and sister.  He was up very early, anxious to go see UNC. We took the college tour with about 8 other families, stopped by the GOAL room where he knew a few students, met a few more, had lunch and then met with the wrestling coach. My son was so enthusiastic to see the school, the dorms, the gyms and the dining halls and to learn about all the possibilities.  He has been telling everyone since then about his college plans.  Wonderful to have this opportunity in Colorado!”
If you’re thinking college, set up that tour! We encourage students with intellectual disabilities to attend the regular college tour and set up a time to visit the inclusive service offices at each school.
