In the last few years, it has become popular in some circles to dismiss the church. These critics say any day now the church will go away. I might as well say it: I love the church. This weekend I shared in four different worship services. I know I used to preach six times a weekend, but four was a step up from recent months. Here is my report: God showed up. Every time. Unforgettable.
Paul loved the church too. He spent a lot of time in Corinth. In this second letter, he starts with a conciliatory tone. Then in chapter ten, his tone suddenly changes. Scholars say he received a new report about how his opponents were criticizing him. Others say chapters 10 to 13 were a third letter that was combined at some point. Either way, Paul took off the gloves. He stands up to his critics with deep confidence in the Lord.
In his vulnerability, Paul explains how God worked through his weaknesses to create deep dependence. Instead of hiding his weaknesses, Paul boasts about them. God’s strength was perfected in Paul’s weakness (12:7-10).
In the end, Paul reminds them that they are all part of the same family. Paul returns to a conciliatory tone. He calls the church to live in unity. This morning I awakened to a text from one of my pastor friends. He signed his letter to fifteen or more pastors #sameteam. What a great way to start the day. One by one these brothers began to encourage each other by text. We prayed for each other by name. Last week we stood on the roof of a building in the heat of the sun and prayed for God to send the fire of revival among his people.
This weekend we sang, prayed, and listened to music in at least seven different languages. Sometimes we sang with an orchestra, organ, and piano. At other times, we were led by a band. In each case, the Holy Spirit moved among his people. He spoke to us through the scriptures. As my friend Kent McMahan used to say, “My heart is full.” As I look ahead to the years to come, I believe that the church’s future is as bright as all the promises of God. When God shows up and does something great among his people, I do not want to miss it. Join us as we find our way, together. It will be good because our God is so good!
