It’s been five years since The Financial Justice Project was launched with the mission to reduce the burden of fines and fees on San Francisco's low income communities of color. Since then, we’ve deepened our partnerships with community organizations, impacted people, and government agencies to implement dozens of fine and fee reforms.
Our collective work has lifted tens of millions of dollars of debt off of San Franciscans who are struggling. Together, we have advanced reforms that work better, for government and for people.

We’re excited to share a new case study about our work from Results for America. The case study shows how we reformed excessive fines and fees in San Francisco and describes how other governments can do the same.
Hint: Any government can reform fines and fees. It just takes patience, passion, and partnerships. You can read the full case study here.

This case study reflects the growing attention that governments and communities are paying to fines and fees and their impacts on low-income communities of color. And we hope that it inspires bold and equitable action to reform fines and fees.
Thank you to Results for America for uplifiting the importance of fine and fee reform! And as always, we’re thankful to our partners in the community and in government for working with us to lift the burden of excessive fines and fees off of struggling San Franciscans. We look forward to continue to advance Financial Justice locally and across the country.
Yours in Financial Justice, Anne, Michelle, and Shawn
