Acts 9:1-2
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

New International Version (NIV)
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” We used to say that when I was young. But as I grew older, I learned it was not true. Words possess power to give or take life.

Philip spoke life-giving words everywhere he went (8:40). By contrast Saul breathed out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. Saul was hunting for the followers of “The Way.” Jesus, the Way, was in Saul’s way. So he pursued and persecuted the followers of Jesus, and took them as prisoners. He arrested Christians until he was arrested by Christ.

Angry, hurtful words abound in our world. People say bad things to us and about us. We are tempted to use the world’s methods to accomplish our purposes. This would be a mistake. Let the sinful world say what it will, we must speak truth in love. This means we do not call names. Jesus said if we call others Raca (Empty-head) or fool, we are in danger of judgment. God works when his people bring good news. Let’s talk about Jesus more and other things less. Ready? Go!

Pray with me:
Father, let the living Word, Jesus guide us in all the words we speak today. Help us to speak the words of “Eternal life” (John 6:68) as our Savior did. Make us more like him to validate the words we speak today. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
