Season's Greetings from CAS
What Is Not an Art or a Science?
The Liberal Arts at Miami: A Force for Positive Change

Dear CAS Alumni and Friends:
Wintry weather has begun to settle in here at Oxford and students are bracing themselves for final exams, reminding us that we’re about to close out another fall semester here at Miami. In the College of Arts and Science (CAS) we have been reflecting on our accomplishments from the 2016 calendar year and thought that we would share a few.
It’s impossible to fit everything into this newsletter, so I would like to take some direction from our new university president, Gregory Crawford, who in his inauguration address spoke of “four mindsets that undergird meaningful connectivity: holistic learning, social justice, change creation, and virtuous leadership.”
The transformative liberal arts education provided by the CAS to every Miami student is intrinsically embedded with these four mindsets. When they graduate, our students are equipped to become forward-thinking global citizens of the 21st century. Each of them has the potential to find great success as a force of good and make decisive changes in an unstable world.
And as always, it’s been our alumni who have steadfastly proven their dedication and support for Miami and the CAS, and I would like to thank all of you sincerely for your involvement and support. Many of you have engaged with the CAS as speakers, mentors, internship providers, board members, and much more -- and your financial support helps to provide scholarships and opportunities for our students, including:
  • Professionalization of the liberal arts in the form of numerous study away and internship programs, including our popular “Inside” series

  • International study programs, in which Miami was recently ranked #1 nationwide in undergraduate student participation

  • Research and experiential learning opportunities, including the costs of supplies and travel expenses for students to attend regional and national conferences

  • Emergency funds for those CAS students who are affected by unforeseen health and/or family employment issues

Keeping these resources in mind, please be sure to consider a gift to the CAS before the end of the year. Such donations play a major role in helping us meet our priority needs and continue to build (and maintain) our legacy.
Thank you, and I wish you the best this holiday season!

16 different high schools with a total of 22 teams to compete at Miami on December 18
For its second year, the MockHawk Tournament will be sponsored on campus by Miami's James Lewis Family Mock Trial team (widely called Miami Mock Trial, or MMT). According to the MTT website, the team has "won more than 15 regional championships, with more consecutive appearances than any other program and more All-Americans than any school east of the Mississippi."

MMT was founded in 1993 by a group of undergraduate students who were interested in pursuing careers as trial attorneys. This past April, MMT placed second in their division and third overall at the 2016 American Mock Trial Association National Championship Tournament held in Greenville, South Carolina.
