Summer term is just around the corner and, with it, the start of a number of study-away/study-abroad programs in the Department of Media, Journalism & Film (MJF).
MJF is one of the largest providers of study-away/study-abroad programs to the University community. During the summer, students experience the unparalleled access to newsmakers and the journalists who cover them in Inside Washington, an up-close perspective on the PR world in Inside New York, the work of journalists in a fledgling democracy in Kosovo, and the unique world of U.K. media and celebrity culture in Inside London. During winter term, students choose from Inside Hollywood, NYC Media, and Inside Chicago. There’s a semester-long Inside Washington experience in the spring.
Did you ever wonder where it all began?
These programs can trace themselves to two pioneering efforts. The first was called Laws, Hall & Associates/International, a six-week London-based workshop co-administered by the old Department of Communication, Graphic Design, and Marketing. It began in 1988 and continued every summer for two decades. It was the inspiration for Inside London. The second was a Spring break trip to Washington, D.C. organized by Dr. Howard Kleiman to introduce some of his broadcast journalism capstone students to the nexus of media and politics. That program was offered in 1999 and 2000 and eventually morphed into Inside Washington.
From there, our programs in New York, Washington, Hollywood, London, Chicago, and Kosovo were born and grew. We also experimented with a program for journalism students in Cuba. Each of the programs is distinct but what they all have in common is the objective of introducing students to media people in varied places and contexts by actually going to where those people work and showing them at work. Many of our programs leverage the loyalty of alums who work in the locations we visit. Most provide the opportunity to intern, to shadow professionals at work, or to work on projects for real-world clients.
Miami prides itself on the high percentage of students who do at least one study abroad program while they’re here. At MJF, we additionally work to marry the experience of studying in a different city or country with a behind-the-scenes look at the world of media professionals. And we take special pride in the numbers of our students who take part in those programs, find rewarding careers in the media and related fields, and then are willing to give back to those programs by offering to host site visits, to meet with our students, to provide internships and shadowing experiences, or to be clients for workshop projects.
Where will we go next? Nashville? Silicon Valley? Australia? Stay tuned. And, wherever your summer takes you, safe travels!

Remembrance
MJF lost one of its students -- Audrey Davis -- during winter break. Davis was a 22-year-old senior from Hicksville, Ohio. She was co-managing editor of The Miami Student at the time of her death.
A celebration of the life of Audrey Davis will be held and a tree will be planted in Audrey’s honor behind the McGuffey Museum, directly across Oak Street from Williams Hall. Here is the story her colleagues at The Miami Student wrote about her.
