Hello Spring!
It’s the no-jacket-ditch-the-boots-and-switch-to-sandals time of year! Well, we might still need a light jacket and closed toed shoes, but last Saturday was a much-needed day of warm sunshine. I threw some cushions on my patio chairs and drank in the warming rays as I reflected on my favorite springtime indicators…the sensory subtleties that tell me winter is over.
• Chirping Birds. Like clockwork, the birds have flown back north and I hear them during my morning runs.
• Blooming Forsythia. An early spring bloomer, the yellow flowers are like balls of sunshine practically shouting, “Warm days ahead.”
• Opening Day. This year there is so much talk about Bryce Harper. I hope the Harper Hype isn’t over-harped.
• The Smell of Mulch. The earthy aroma of freshly dressed flower beds…you either love it or hate it.
• Cadbury Cream Eggs. These smooth, milk chocolate delights with oozing fondant centers are practically hatching on the Main Line. For a large assortment of these spring treats, hop on over to Taste of Britain in Wayne. It’s the mothership of Cadbury chocolates.
• Long Lines for Ice Cream. 20 years and running, there were outstretched lines of ice custard fans waiting for free dibs at Rita’s Italian Ice on the first day of spring. Drive by Handel’s Ice Cream in Berwyn during after school hours or weekends and you’ll see streams of kids waiting their turn at the order window.
Goodbye frigid winter and hello ice cream brain freezes. So long snow and hello mulch. It’s time to open windows and salute the sounds, smells and signs of spring!

GEN Z & THE SOCIAL MEDIA EPIDEMIC
Q: What do parents need to know about the social media epidemic and how can they help their middle school Gen Zers (ages 10-13) navigate this new social landscape?
A: We are in the midst of a Social Media Epidemic and it is dramatically influencing the Gen Zers (born 1996-2010) that are living in our homes. They:
• Get info from YouTube and their peers vs. mentors or parents.
• Communicate digitally 35% of the time.
• Care less about driving or dating than their
1990’s counterparts.
• Prefer to stay home, hang out and scroll social media.
This is the new reality. Many psychologists have pointed to screen time as the culprit of stress, depression and suicide in Gen Z, but that idea is oversimplified. Most items we use daily have screens now; refrigerators, cars, microwaves.
One of the major contributing factors to this issue is social media, not all screens. Gen Z isn’t mature enough to manage the magnitude of information, the addictive nature, the heightened emotional toll of social media, or the ever-present effect of those Likes and Un-Likes. It can cause an unhealthy obsession. So, what role are we going to play as parents to help our children through this process?
Be an active member of your child’s digital life. It’s vital to check-in and have in-person face time. In this digital age, we call it 2.0 Parenting; being deliberate, coaching and guiding frequently.
There is something unique and phenomenal about the Z generation. They are creative, entrepreneurial, cause-driven individuals with a mission to change the world. Like a tree, much of their success depends on how well they are nurtured. But, understand what they're going through, where they are and meet them there. If your children are able to engage with you in their world, it’ll help boost their confidence and help them in this space.
