New Graduate Fellowships and Awards Promote Professional Development

The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has introduced three new fellowships and awards for graduate students, including the INSPIRE Fellowship for interdisciplinary research, the STEER Fellowship for teaching excellence, and the CREATION Award for enhancing graduate-level courses. Graduate Student and Advisor Pair Awarded HHMI Gilliam Fellowship
|
For the second consecutive year, a Georgia Tech student and their advisor have been awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study. Autumn Peterson, a Ph.D. student in biology, will receive $53,000 per year for up to three years for dissertation research. Peterson’s advisor, William Ratcliff, will participate in activities that address challenges to diversity and inclusion at the graduate level.

NSF Rapid Response to Earthquakes in Turkey
|
In February, a major earthquake event devastated the south-central region of the Republic of Türkiye (Turkey) and northwestern Syria. In an effort to better map the aftershocks of the earthquake event, Zhigang Peng, a professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and graduate students Phuc Mach and Chang Ding, alongside researchers at the Scientific and Technological Research Institution of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) and researchers at the University of Missouri, are dedicating their research to better understand just how, why, and when these earthquakes are occurring.

Grad Women's Welcome Back Coffee Hour
|
All new and current GT graduate women are invited to join the Women's Resource Center on Wednesday, August 23, at 10am for a coffee hour at the Women's Resource Center! Coffee and snacks will be provided. Use this as an opportunity to network with other grad women, get a head start on your to-do list, and get to know the WRC. RSVPs are encouraged for those planning to attend.

Wellness Opportunity: Open Enrollment for Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) now opens
|
The enrollment/waiver period for Georgia Tech’s Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) provided by Stamps Health Services opens on July 24 and closes on September 25. Coverage for this policy year will begin on August 1, 2023, and end on July 31, 2024. This program is available for enrolled undergraduate and graduate students and their eligible dependents who do not already have insurance and includes comprehensive covered benefits (medical, dental, vision, prescription, and worldwide travel). Connect with a fellow student through the Peer Coaching Program (PCP) in the Center for Mental Health Care & Resources. Issues that peer coaching can help with include:

Wellness Opportunity: The Wellness Empowerment Center Welcomes all Grad Students
|
W.E. Center would like to welcome students to campus this fall and introduce them to the Wellness Empowerment Center (W.E. Center). The W.E. Center is hosting its second annual W.E. Welcome You event on August 23 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the lawn between Stamps Health Services and the Campus Recreation Center. Students will be able to participate in fun games, enjoy delicious snacks, and walk away with some FREE swag. The event also provides an opportunity for students to engage with W.E. Center staff and learn more about the department’s programs, services, and resources, which are designed to promote student success both in and out of the classroom. Along with all the fun activities, giveaways, and free food, students will learn about the pillars of the department, which include Community Nutrition and Body Image, Health Education, and VOICE.

Funding Opportunity: Presidential Management Fellows Program
|
Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is administered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. PMF Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. The PMF program provides some sustenance during the first years of employment and encourages development of leadership capabilities, ultimately encouraging and leading to a career in the government. The PMF Class of 2024 Application is anticipated to be open for a 2-week period in the fall of 2023.

The Chih Foundation awards graduate students whose research publication(s) reflect invention and innovation for the betterment of society. Current Georgia Tech Ph.D. students who have not yet completed their doctorate and who have completed publications in either Engineering, Computer Science, or Health Sciences are eligible. The international doctorate symposium, Divergence in Architectural Research, organized by the ConCave Ph.D. Student Group, takes place on April 4-5, 2024, This symposium provides a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge research in architecture and design-allied fields. Ph.D. students whose work emerges from the architectural domain and related fields are encouraged to submit their abstracts. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and must clearly outline the research objectives, methodology, and key findings or contributions.
