Dr. Peter Haslund understands on a personal level the importance of community colleges and what a profound difference an education can make in someone’s life. He witnessed it as a professor at SBCC over four decades, and in his own life starting out as a student at Los Angeles City College.

“I love teaching, and have seen how an education at SBCC changes lives, providing opportunities to people who are struggling to survive and find their way in the world. By including the SBCC Foundation in my estate plans, I know that more students will be able to take advantage of all that SBCC has to offer.

Through the Foundation, students receive both financial assistance and emotional support—that much-needed sense of caring and encouragement—that transforms despair into hope. At the end of the day, this is what inspires them to continue and succeed.”

In addition to teaching, Haslund helped to establish groundbreaking initiatives at SBCC, such as the Study Abroad program and the International and Global Studies program. SBCC excursions abroad provided immersive experiences for students, as they were “in class” 24/7.
