Jerry Anderson, the Richard M. and Anita Calkins Distinguished Professor of Law, has been named dean of Drake Law School, effective July 1. He succeeds Ben Ullem, who is currently serving a two-year term as dean. Anderson joined the Drake Law faculty in 1991 and served as associate dean from 1996-2001.
A group of 14 Drake Law students visited Cuba in January, led by Professor Neil Hamilton. During the trip, students learned about Cuban agricultural development and law while experiencing the country’s culture. The group visited the United States Embassy, met with Cuban agricultural lawyers, toured a cooperative organic farm, and more.
Drake Law School has been selected to host the 2016 Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. (CLEO) Pre-law Summer Institute June 5-July 2. In addition, Drake is one of four partner law schools participating in the CLEO Legally Inspired Cohort (CLIC), a pilot program that aims to increase access to law school for minority students.
The Drake Law team of Erika Bertrand (3L) and Nick Behlke (3L) won the ABA Region 8 Client Counseling Competition in February at the University of Nebraska. They will compete at the Client Counseling National Finals in April, becoming the fourth Drake Law team to do so since 2005. Drake last won the national title in 2013.
David S. Walker, the Dwight D. Opperman Distinguished Professor of Law, is retiring after 40 years at Drake Law School, including two terms as dean. Marty Begleiter, the Ellis and Nelle Levitt Distinguished Professor of Law, is also retiring after 38 years at the Law School. Drake 3L advocates for first-ever Girls Court in Iowa
After Laura McGuire wrote about sex trafficking and the need for a Girls Court in Iowa, some local judges became inspired. As a result, Iowa's first-ever Girls Court, which is designed to address the gender-specific needs of young women, recently opened in Polk County.
Professor Jerry Foxhoven leads efforts for juveniles
Jerry Foxhoven, professor and executive director of the Neal and Bea Smith Legal Clinic, has spent a lot of time involved in efforts supporting juveniles, including a bill that Iowa Gov. Branstad recently signed to make most Iowa juvenile records confidential.
Alumna uses law degree to fight for civil rights
Less than three years out of law school, Latrice Lacey, LW'13, advocates for civil rights as executive director of the Davenport Civil Rights Commission. She also recently implemented a diversion program in Scott County through the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform.

Pedro Salazar, LW’13, accepted a position as corporate counsel at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, N.C.
George A. LaMarca, LW’70, was named by Best Lawyers as the 2016 “Lawyer of the Year” in the Des Moines Metropolitan Area in the category of Personal Injury Litigation - Plaintiffs.
Tania Nordelo Ogden, LW’92, joined Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A., in the firm’s workers’ compensation defense team.
H. Daniel Holm, LW'79, was inducted into the Worldwide Registry.
