Finalized Rule Expands Public Agencies Ability to Fund Legal Representation
Last month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Administration for Children and Families expanded legal representation opportunities for children, families, caregivers and tribes involved in the foster care system. The new ruling will provide federal funds to states to help: 1) Child welfare agencies cover attorney costs, 2) Families secure stable housing, public benefits or establish guardianship, 3) Prevent unnecessary removal of a child from their home and 4) Youth exiting foster care access legal documents.

New Federal Funding Opportunities
As they become available, Texas CASA will share state and federal grant funding opportunities that could interest you or your local program. There are currently a few open federal grant opportunities that may be relevant to your program or related initiatives. To apply, you will be required to register through Grants.gov and JustGrants (federal grants websites). These are grants administered directly by federal agencies and Texas CASA does not manage or participate in these grants.

Recruitment Bounty: Tip of the Month
With the school year ending, teachers may be retiring and looking for a new pursuit to fill their time. Retired teachers make great CASA volunteers since many are already familiar with CASA and love helping and supporting kids. Use the Texas Retired Teachers Association directory to find and contact your local retired teacher’s chapter and ask how you can get in front of retired teachers or hand out materials to their members.
