What plans do you have for the summer? Are you taking any summer classes?
A better question to ask since this COVID-19 crisis might be what my plans for the summer were! Nothing like a global pandemic to put a damper on short-to-medium term planning. I am taking an online summer class, which will hopefully instill some sense of normalcy. But I’m hoping things will stabilize enough for me to head up home. The Great Lakes region is breathtaking in the summer- and I really miss being by the water.
Since we can’t travel, what fictional world or place would you like to visit?
A galaxy a long time ago and far far away. Alternately, I’m still waiting for my letter from Hogwarts.
Do you have a secret talent?
It’s probably not a talent per se, but I’m pretty good at remembering sequences of numbers- dates, passwords, you name it. It’s ironic since mathematics is not my forte and I have a poor memory generally. I experience synesthesia- which is a psychological condition that’s more or less a “cross-wiring” of two or more senses. So I can “see” number sequences as patterns or random moving images in my mind. It’s great for memorization but it makes arithmetic difficult because it can get distracting.
Matt Riley, Director of Associations for International Conference Services (ICS), gave a virtual guest lecture about how association management firm and professional conference organizers are navigating covid-19, as well as best practices in digital marketing for events, including the importance of the website, e-mail marketing cadences, social media and more.
Greta Wilber, VP of Distribution for Karisma Hotels & Resorts, presented a virtual guest lecture on distribution, including merchandising strategies, OTA relationships, and strategies for encouraging more direct bookings while ensuring that guests who book through various channels still have a memorable experience.
GWSB MTA alumni Jenny Abreu, Courtney Cacatian, Karl Egloff and David Goldstein, along with Alissa Thornton, Senior Career Coach at GWSB Career Center, shared their experience and advice on finding employment during these challenging times as the firs tpart of the GW MTA Student Webinar Series. A recording of the webinar is now available and you can access the on-demand recording and additional resources referenced in the webinar here
Dr. Stuart Levy, Associate Teaching Professor of Management and Tourism Studies, presented "The Future of eTourism: Seven Opportunities in Seven Minutes" as the keynote speaker in the eTourism and Beyond Virtual Conference on May 4, 2020. The conference was organized by MTA alumnus Dr. Shawn Lee, Associate Professor of Event Management and Technology, and his George Mason University students.
