3 New Features in Blackboard

Improvements and new features are added to Blackboard Ultra on a monthly basis. If you want to know what's new for the month of August, take a look at these release notes for the complete list of enhancements. We'd like to draw your attention to three in particular:
Course Images/Banner and Learning Modules
Images can be used as banners at the top of your Ultra site to create an identity for your course and assist students when identifying which course they are accessing. See this article available in our Service Portal Knowledge Base to learn more about Course Banners. With the August feature release, images can also be added to Learning Modules. Learn more about adding learning module images in this article available in our service portal.
Group Spaces
Groups are essential for fostering collaboration, promoting active learning, and deepening understanding of course material. Several enhancements have happened to the groups tool in the latest release. Most noticeably, Groups are now available in the top navigation bar of a course. For more information about the latest changes to groups see the latest release notes.
Turning off Course Messaging
Instructors now can now disable the message tool in their course settings. See this article available in our Service Portal to learn more.

Prepare for Fall with These Five Tasks

Task 1) Need a course restored, merged or user added? See these common new semester requests found in our Service Portal:
Task 2) Review your students' pictures in the photo roster
Using your students' ID photos is an excellent way to help you learn student names. You can easily access these photos through the "Class List" tool in GVSU Faculty/Staff Additional Banner Applications (VPN connection required for off-campus access).
Note: Faculty will only see photos in courses in which they are the instructor of record in Banner. Assistance with using this tool can be found in this Knowledge Base article found in our Service Portal.
Task 3) Check your Blackboard readiness with the new semester checklist
The New Semester Checklist is a great place to review some of the basic and essential functions found in Blackboard. Blackboard makes it easy to share your syllabus or a lecture, efficiently collect and manage assignments, and securely share grades and feedback.
Task 4) Get your students oriented
All students and faculty have been enrolled in a Blackboard "orientation" site geared for students to help prepare and determine their readiness for online learning. The orientation provides advice and skills for online learning success and familiarizes students with many of the Blackboard Ultra features that their courses will use. When you create your welcome announcement, it's not a bad idea to remind your students to review the orientation site so that they are prepared to have a successful semester.
Task 5) Review and register for professional development opportunities
If you did not teach during the spring/summer semester, this may be your first time teaching with Blackboard Ultra. To support GVSU's commitment to teaching and learning, be sure to review the various Blackboard Ultra training options. We have over 50+ ways to join us this semester. Please also review the Blackboard Ultra instructor resources in GVSU's IT Service Portal, contact your eLearning Technologies liaisons, or submit a consultation ticket.

Support Student Mental Health with the Mental Health Communications Toolkit

You have the power to make a positive impact on the well-being of your students! The University Counseling Center maintains a toolkit to help you along the way. In the Mental Health Communications Toolkit, you'll find an array of resources, communications materials, graphics, video clips, and more, to assist you in sending relevant mental health information to students that will help them navigate mental health concerns, enhance their overall wellness, and engage in their academics and campus life more effectively. Select the month, pick a topic, and copy, paste, support! Questions can be directed to gvcounsl@gvsu.edu or phone 616-331-3266.

Message Manager Folder

If you have begun working in your fall Blackboard courses, you may have noticed a folder that's only visible to instructors.
Developed by the Provost's office Rapid Response Team in conjunction with advising, FTLC, and other faculty and staff, the folder contains a collection of communication suggestions from faculty to students and was inspired by focus groups and interviews conducted with instructors of first-year courses during Winter 2023. This folder provides sample starting points for a variety of styles and incidents. These templates are not required but merely suggestions for faculty looking for ideas. You will find placeholders for student, professor, and class names and office hours that can be customized to fit your course.
