Join the adventure
with a NEW citizen science program

Here's how it works.

Scientists at the Desert Research Institute need your help. During winter storms, keep your eyes on the sky and tell us whether it is raining, snowing, or a wintry mix. It is especially helpful if you can tell us when rain changes to snow, or snow changes back to rain.

With your observations, we are working on better estimating how much water falls on the Sierra Nevada during winter. This is difficult with current satellite technology, especially in the mountains, so we need observations from all over the region.

To sign up, text WINTER to 855-909-0798. You’ll receive 3 intro texts over the first 3 days, including the first one prompting you to download the free Citizen Science Tahoe app. Afterwards, we’ll only send you alerts when there is a winter storm in the region. (Msg and data rates apply. 4 msgs/mo. Reply STOP to cancel).

Open the Citizen Science Tahoe app now to discover the Tahoe Rain or Snow survey.

Visit us at Diamond Peak Ski Resort this weekend for a free Stories kit.

DWe will be onsite from 10am-5pm Saturday Jan 11 and Sunday January 12. Come learn how to take beautiful snow crystal pictures and get a free kit.
This program is generously made possible by the Tahoe Fund and a matching gift from the Mathman family.
Here are some photos from our adventures last weekend at Mt. Rose.

Snow is on the way.

Here is the latest from the National Weather Service, forecast for the Incline Village area.

Send us your snow crystal pictures from wherever you live, work or play!

Thank you again from the citizen science team at DRI!
