Jeremiah 42:1-4
Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray to the Lord your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left.  Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”  “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.”
New International Version (NIV)
Remember the old spiritual, “It’s me, it’s me, it’s me O Lord standing in the need of prayer.”  When we need prayer, to whom do we go?  Do you ever ask others to pray for you?  Are you open to the counsel they find from the Lord?

After the exile, a remnant of Jews remained in Jerusalem.  They asked Jeremiah to pray for them so that they would know the way to go and the things they needed to do.  We sense a desperation in their appeal to the prophet.  They seem to say, “Tell us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth and we will do it.”

Jeremiah is the kind of person we need to pray for us.  First, he had a history of praying.  God had promised him, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3).  Second, he was committed to God and to the well-being of his people, saying, “I will tell you every word that the Lord answers you; I won’t withhold a word from you.”

Our struggle with God’s will is frequently not a matter of understanding but of obedience.  We are often educated beyond our level of obedience to God.  Let the promise of these Israelites guide us today, “We will certainly obey the Lord our God.”  Spurgeon taught that the hierarchy of heaven is ordered according to obedience.  Pray for me and I will pray for you today.  Let’s do what he says!

 Pray with me:
Father, tell us the way we should go and the things we should do today.  Don’t withhold a word from us.  Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant we will obey you.  We will certainly obey the Lord our God.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
