Tell Congress How Federal Tax Policies Today Affect Our Well-Being in the Future

Last week, the House Committee on Ways and Means debated and approved the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act legislation, which includes a provision to significantly weaken the Johnson Amendment by permitting any 501(c)(3) organization to endorse candidates for public office in certain circumstances. The bill will now move to the House floor with a final vote likely before the end of the week.

On Thursday, the Senate version of the tax legislation was unveiled. While the Senate version does not include language to undermine the Johnson Amendment, the plan, similar to the House bill, still contains significant tax cuts for the wealthy. If each chamber passes their own version of the tax legislation, the differences will likely be hashed out in a conference committee over the coming weeks.

The outcome of the federal tax policy debate will play a critical role in determining how well our communities can support the systems that build and maintain well-being at every stage of life. NHSA supports a federal tax code that:

  • Boosts the economy by protecting the net incomes of ordinary households;
  • Ensures robust funding for the most effective programs;
  • Strengthens the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC);
  • Increases access to early childhood supports for working families;
  • Expands incentives for charitable giving; and
  • Protects nonprofit nonpartisanship.
Take Action:

Your advocacy will encourage lawmakers to create a budget and tax system that provides these essential elements to allow our communities to flourish. We encourage you to use NHSA’s tax legislation talking points and contact your Senators and Representative, and ask them to oppose the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This resource applies FrameWorks Institute’s research-based narrative to explain how the budget and tax system provides the means for human services to bring out the full potential of everyone.
