Hi Neighbor!
Sandy and Lonnie Phillips are members of a club that no one wants to join. In 2012, their 24-year-old daughter Jessi was killed when a gunman opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Since then, the couple has traveled in their RV to mass shootings across America to support parents and survivors. Two weeks ago, they were in Uvalde, Texas—the 20th mass shooting they’ve visited since their daughter died.
I first heard about the Phillips’ on an episode of This American Life. The episode originally aired in 2018, but the podcast producers re-aired it last week, in part to prove just how little has changed in this country. Four years later and the pattern is identical: Mass shooting, outpouring of grief, condolences from leaders and politicians, public outrage, legislation that goes nowhere. Repeat. So where do we go from here? What happens next? READ MORE

Protect your Skin from the Inside Out
It’s no secret that the sun’s rays are getting stronger and stronger each year. Even mild to moderate exposure to UV light can cause significant damage. Sunscreens and sunblock are essential for protection against external exposure from harmful UV rays.
Several natural ingredients have been shown to protect our internal environment. Niacinamide is one such ingredient that promotes DNA repair before, during, and after UV exposure. A variant form of Vitamin B3, niacinamide also plays a role in maintaining adequate levels of ATP in skin cells, which UV light tends to deplete after exposure. It is not uncommon now for some dermatologists to recommend consumption of niacinamide as there are a few studies explaining its anti-skin cancer properties.
Another natural ingredient, Polypodium leucotomos, helps prevent changes in the skin at the cellular level while promoting DNA repair. Extracts from certain types of oranges contain high levels of phenolic compounds that function as potent antioxidants, thereby promoting the body’s natural immune response and healthy skin function. While this is not an exhaustive list of ingredients, they are key players in helping promote optimal function of our skin from the inside out!
