Gear up for the summer bike count season...
Every Bike Counts
Portland's 24-hour bike count celebration!
You are invited to participate in Portland's first ever volunteer-run 24-hour bike count
Thursday, May 14, noon - Friday, May 15, noon
SE Ankeny & 28th Ave
Help us kick-off the summer bike count season!
volunteers needed!
As part of PDX Bike Month this May, PBOT's Active Transportation Division will be hosting a 24-hour Celebration Station while intrepid volunteers (like you!) stand on the corner to record bike traffic. Cyclists riding through the intersection are encouraged to stop for a snack and a chat so we can say "thanks for riding!" and mark that tally.
Every Bike Counts is the perfect way to kick-off the summer Bike Count season beginning June 2. And if you are able to help out with the 24-hour count you will get first pick of summer count sites!
Yes, count me in! I want to help.
What's this all about? Simply put, data informs decision-making, and collecting bike ridership data takes time.
More than 100 volunteers take to the Portland streets each summer to record bike traffic across the city for two hours at a time. These pen-and-paper peak-hour counts are the basis for daily bike estimates which help us understand the needs and conditions for getting more people out enjoying a bike ride.
But many, many Portlanders are riding their bikes during off-peak hours - riding to work, running errands, or just cruising for the fun of it. Bike Counts and special events often miss these riders. By counting for 24 straight hours we will have a chance to say thank you to everyone on two wheels while raising awareness about the summer bike count and the need for volunteers.
What does a full day of bike traffic in Portland actually look like? We're about to find out!
Here's how you can help. A 24-hour count is going to need a lot of hands to pull together, and that's why we need you! Here are a few particular volunteer jobs:
  1. Count! We need volunteers to count in one- to two-hour time slots starting at noon on Thursday, May 14, and ending at noon on Friday, May 15. Just like the standard bike count, you'll be tracking helmet use, gender, and turning movements of each passing cyclist at the intersection of SE 28th & Ankeny. We'll even provide the clipboard.
  2. Business Outreach! For all you savvy fundraisers out there, we need volunteers to help get the local businesses on board. We'll be focusing our door-to-door outreach at businesses along 28th Ave, SE Stark, E Burnside, and NE Glisan.
  3. Make Fun! The Celebration Station will be at the corner for a full 24 hours and we need fun ideas to encourage people to stop by. Do you have a fun activity or a special skill? Want to help staff the table? Help us get creative!
Please respond by e-mail (taylor.sutton@portlandoregon.govor phone (503-823-4533) if you would like to volunteer or for more information.
If you would like to be a counter, please include your preferred count time. Count slots are first come, first served so get in touch soon!
