What's this all about? Simply put, data informs decision-making, and collecting bike ridership data takes time.
More than 100 volunteers take to the Portland streets each summer to record bike traffic across the city for two hours at a time. These pen-and-paper peak-hour counts are the basis for daily bike estimates which help us understand the needs and conditions for getting more people out enjoying a bike ride.
But many, many Portlanders are riding their bikes during off-peak hours - riding to work, running errands, or just cruising for the fun of it. Bike Counts and special events often miss these riders. By counting for 24 straight hours we will have a chance to say thank you to everyone on two wheels while raising awareness about the summer bike count and the need for volunteers.
What does a full day of bike traffic in Portland actually look like? We're about to find out!
