Walsh University and Notre Dame University collaborated to investigate AI applications for monitoring college athletes’ nutrition and fitness. Dr. Amy J. Heston, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Research Advisor at Walsh, along with a team of researchers and nutritionists from NDU, evaluated chatbots (DeepSeek, etc.) and AI nutrition apps for macronutrient tracking. Experimental trials examined photo recognition capabilities, personalized feedback, and cost-effectiveness while identifying AI limitations and errors. Results indicated that the apps demonstrated potential, but not as a replacement for clinical guidance.
