Advising Notes

Juniors are Registering Now!

Remember to check your SPIRE homepage to see when your enrollment date/time is; up 'til that date, you can put courses in your shopping cart and then hit "'enroll' as soon as your appointment opens. 

When reviewing the Spire course guides, make sure to review the restrictions, if any. If you do not fit the course requirements, you may not be able to enroll on your own and/or may need instructor permission to enroll. The Comm courses & descriptions for Fall '21 are available on our website. 

Appointments with advisors are filling up fast! Please make sure to schedule your pre-reg appointment as soon as possible. As always, we recommend dropping in to see a Peer Advisor first - they will be able to answer most, if not all, of your questions. Your Comm advisor's contact information is listed on your Spire homepage and to make an appointment, you can go to umass.campus.eab.com.
Juniors (57 – 86 credits) April 12 - 13 
Sophomores (27 – 56 credits) April 22 - 23 
Freshmen (26 credits and below) April 28


And don't forget! The fall semester begins on Sept 1 and add/drop will now be 7 calendar days/one week of classes.

Peer Advisor Hours

The Peer Advisors are continuing to hold drop in office hours, Monday through Thursday via Zoom:
Mondays, 9am-1pm
Tuesdays, 9:30am-1:30pm
Wednesdays, 11am-3pm
Thursdays, 9-11am
They also answer emails during these hours at askcomm@comm.umass.edu. Please drop in or email during these open hours for any course related questions!

Do you Need Scholarships?

Now is the time to build your scholarship portfolio! There is money available for study abroad, academics and internships, all of which cut across your multiple years as a student. All scholarships are accessed through Academic Works and once you build your profile, it is easy to adapt it for particular opportunities. If you have any questions, you can watch this introductory video and most questions about the profile building are addressed in this Question Prep Sheet. If you have any questions about the scholarship process, please email Director of Student Success Adrian Grace.
Check out their calendar of events for dates, times, and info session registration. Sessions are held via Zoom and led by ONSA advisors. You’re bound to discover a scholarship that aligns with your studies and career goals as you learn about scholarships’ eligibility requirements, application deadlines, and keys to successful application-writing, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

Summer Work-Study

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences has an opportunity for a communications assistant to work on campus remote to help create content for the department's website and develop the its social media presence. Additional tasks include, but are not limited to: assisting with alumni outreach, updating bulletin boards and collecting photographs, and other special projects. The Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH) has various offerings from therapy/support groups to free skills workshops. All groups and workshops will be via Zoom and open to all UMass undergraduate and graduate students, unless otherwise specified on the CCPH website. Innovative skills-based free 3 part workshop open to all UMASS students, focused on learning practical tools for coping with stress and anxiety. Increase your sense of emotional wellbeing, practice strategies to calm your mind and body, increase your mindfulness, and learn to better manage emotional distress and feeling overwhelmed. We encourage you to download the Career Fair Plus app today, so you may become familiar with the platform. For graduating seniors who do not yet have a job after graduation, meet employers still seeking to hire UMass students for full-time positions. Employers want to hire people who think critically, know how to solve problems, and are strong communicators--everything SBS has prepared you for! Business casual is recommended.
