Parent Education Resources: Giving Back
Today as I was sitting in my warm home, with plenty to eat, wifi, and a fresh cup of coffee, I was reminded that not everyone is as fortunate as I am. A co-worker forwarded a heartwarming video of a man who used his time and talent to help others, and it got me thinking about what I can do to help others during this time. There are so many great opportunities to help those in our community and maybe if I spend a minute sharing information on how you can help too, together we can make a difference. Below are a list of ideas on how we can help others and support those organizations who do so much in our community.
Come donate to the Feeding America food drive at Inglemoor! It will be on Wednesday, December 9th during book pickup time (11 am-2 pm). 4 cans/food items equal an hour for honor society, with 2 hours max. Hours can be used for individual or Vahalla hours. Foods can be things like canned foods, sauces, pasta, baby food, etc. We hope to see you there! If you have any questions please contact Ms. Metz at rmetz@nsd.org.
Cedar Park Northshore Church Food Bank is accepting donations. Want to make a donation of non-perishable food items? There are bins outside the front door that are emptied throughout each day for contact free donations.
They also accept donations of toys and gifts and there is a store available for community members in need during the holidays - you can donate by clicking this link.
The IHS counseling department hopes you'll consider a donation to the Inglemoor Gives InvestEd fund. InvestEd is a local non-profit focused on helping students "Get to School, Engage in School, and Graduate." This fund offers immediate support to IHS students in need. We have the latitude to assist students with whatever challenge they are facing: from college application and testing fees to tutoring, transportation, technology items, and – during the pandemic--groceries, clothing, or utility bills. We can offer this support to students without any hassle or paperwork on their part, it simply involves a conversation with their counselor.
When donating to the Inglemoor InvestED fund, 100% of your contribution goes to helping Inglemoor students: there are no processing or administrative fees, so all money donated goes directly to our students. There are two ways to donate:
By Check: The fastest way to get funds directly into the "Inglemoor Gives" InvestED account is by contributing it directly to IHS via check. Checks should be made payable to Inglemoor with "InvestED donation" noted on the memo line. Mail checks to the school address, Attn: ASB Bookkeeper.
By Credit Card: Coming soon!
Finally, the heartwarming story that made me smile today – I hope it brings a smile to you as well. A Mount Vernon man is building desks for kids in need who are remote learning this year. Carpenter Allan Fredrickson says he'd love to keep helping kids in need, just email him if you're interested in one, at allan.fredrickson@gmail.com.

Attendance Updates:
Because of the importance of student attendance, Inglemoor will now be notifying parents/guardians of daily absences using our Robo Call system. If your child is going to be absent, please email the attendance office (ihsattendance@nsd.org) prior to the absence or no later than 48 hours after the absence.
If your child engages asynchronously, the Robo Call will be a reminder that your student has work to complete and after completing the work, they should email the teacher confirming that the assignment was completed asynchronously.
Wednesdays are still school days. Even though there are no live sessions for students, they are expected to work asynchronously on homework or other assignments. Teachers still take attendance on Wednesdays, and they only way a student can be marked absent is if they miss their scheduled office hours meeting with a teacher. If you receive a robo call about your student on Wednesday evening, it is due to them missing this scheduled office hour meeting.
Just a friendly reminder that Parents/Guardians need to excuse their student's absences within 72 hours (this has just been changed from 48 hours) of the absence occurring. To excuse, please call 425-408-7210 or email ihsattendance@nsd.org or pkartchner@nsd.org with your students first and last name, ID # and what periods/days they will be missing so our attendance secretary can correctly code it. Thank you!
Also, Teachers can mark students absent if they are not participating and there is a blank screen. Please email ihsattendance@nsd.org if you have any questions regarding this process. Thank you for your continued support through these unprecedented times.

News From the School Nurse:
Changes in Immunization Requirements:
Starting August 1, 2020, all immunization records turned in to schools or childcare centers are required by state law to be medically verified. This means immunization records turned in to the school must be from a health care provider, or you must attach paperwork from a health care provider to your handwritten form that shows your child’s records are accurate. In addition, a complete immunization history is required prior to school attendance – there is no longer a 30-day grace period to submit missing vaccination dates.
Only health care provider verified vaccination records are accepted; we can no longer accept parent reported vaccination dates.
We can no longer grant a 30-day grace period to assemble missing records.
Parents and guardians of students whose records are out of compliance will be notified by the school nurse. Please follow up with your health care provider and submit updated records by email or fax (contact info below).
Please know that students will be unable to receive in-person instruction until their required immunizations are completed and appropriate documentation is submitted.
If your child already meets immunization requirements and has records on file with the school, you do not need to do anything. If you aren’t sure, compliance can be checked online at MyIR.net or by checking with your health care provider.
If you have further questions or concerns, please contact the Inglemoor High School Nurses.

Is your student interested in reading and competing against other schools with a group of friends or other Vikings? The Northshore School District high school librarians would like to invite students to form a team to compete in this year's all-district Battle of the Books. They can gather together four friends who like to read and sign up to be a team or sign up as an individual to be placed on a team! The booklist is finalized so they can now begin to read! In the spring, all the district teams will compete to see which team knows the books best and is the district champion!

From the ASB:
ASB Cards Many students and families have reached out to us about purchasing ASB cards. Currently, ASB cards can only be purchased for students who are involved in a club that is attending conferences or competing. ASB card fees will be assessed to individual student accounts as the club member names are provided to us from the advisors. This year, cards will be broken up into semester 1 and semester 2. Each semester will have a $30 ASB card. This means that if a club or activity only competes during one semester the student will only be charged $30 for the semester that their club or activity is competing in. This formula will also be applied to sports when they begin as well.
As we enter different stages in the Northshore Learning Model Status, ASB cards may be available for purchase by all students. We will continue to update you as we enter new stages.
Clubs and Common Interest Groups: Club & Common Interest Group meetings are starting! All Vikings are encouraged and welcome to join any of our 40+ student organizations. Here is the full list of IHS student organizations meeting times & days: 2020-2021 Club Info. Students, don't worry if you missed any information sessions, you can watch Club Information Session Recordings by signing in with your student email and contact advisors with questions.
You are also welcome to form your own club or Common Interest Group! Just follow the steps outlined on the ASB Website.
For any questions around ASB cards, activities or clubs please contact Elisabeth Kowalski ekowalski@nsd.org

Thank You and Celebrations:
Thank you to all of our AMAZING students and teachers for all of their efforts to get to Winter Break. Almost there!
Kudos to Nordic News
WJEA (the Washington Journalism Education Association) has told Nordic that we've won an Emerald Award for last year's work on the newspaper! Journalism awards are based on journalism standards rather than "who's best," and only 2 other high schools in Washington earned this award. I'm so proud of the work our students have done. WJEA even has our first issue's cover featured on their website announcing the winners.
I hope you'll help me in congratulating those students who worked on staff last year and haven't yet graduated:
Divya Akkiraju Eli Shafer Selin Asan Mimi Avalos Miles Gelatt Nathan Guest Margaret He Kellen Hoard Ishika Kaushik Rory Knettles Minita Layal Sofia Leotta
Naomi Nam Gloria Shen Mia Tavares Tammi Tran Cathy Zhao
Thank you again to everyone who donated to the canned food drive!
Wow!! Way to go Band and Cheer. Check out their virtual Halftime Show.
