2015 Year in Review
2015 was a remarkable year for Drake Law School as we celebrated our 150th anniversary, introduced new programs, and took pride in the many accomplishments of our alumni, faculty, and students. Below is a roundup of some of the most memorable stories from 2015.
JANUARY
Drake Law celebrates sesquicentennial
2015 marked Drake Law's 150th anniversary. To celebrate, the Law School hosted several events throughout the year and recognized those who have helped shape Drake Law into who we are today.
Dean named to "15 to Watch in 2015"
Drake Law dean Ben Ullem was named to the "15 to Watch in 2015" list by The Des Moines Register.
FEBRUARY
Drake Law named a best law school for practical training
The National Jurist recognized Drake Law as a Best Law School for Practical Training based on the number of students in simulation courses, externships, clinics, or interschool skills competitions.
MARCH
Drake Law alumna honored with NBA award
Dr. Deborah Ann Turner, LW’07, was awarded the Gertrude E. Rush Award by the National Bar Association in March.
IP Law program ranked in top 25
For the seventh year in a row, U.S. News and World Report placed Drake's Intellectual Property Law program in the top 25 in the nation for overall quality.
Stamatelos named Alumna of the Year
Drake Law named Kimberly Stamatelos, LW'81, as 2015 Alumna of the Year. Stamatelos was honored at the Supreme Court Banquet and 150th Anniversary Kickoff on March 28.
APRIL
Drake 3L wins case in Iowa Supreme Court
In early April, Drake Law student Austin Mouw argued and won the case State v. Young in the Iowa Supreme Court as part of his internship with the State Appellate Defender's Office.
MAY
Drake Law students help legalize food trucks in Iowa
As part of an assignment in Professor Jonathan Rosenbloom's sustainability and law course, Drake Law students helped legalize food trucks in downtown Des Moines. The initiative kicked off May 30.
Drake Law offers new M.J. in Health Law
Drake Law announced in May it would begin offering a new M.J. for healthcare professionals. The program is led by Denise Hill, an experienced medical school professor and health law attorney.

Professor authors textbook
Carolina Academic Press published Professor Mark Kende’s book, Comparative Constitutional Law: South African Cases and Materials in a Global Context.
JULY
Sease named interim director of IP Law Center
Ed Sease, LW'67, partner at McKee, Voorhees, & Sease, P.L.C., was named interim director of the Drake Intellectual Property Law Center beginning July 1.
Professor selected to lead legal delegation trip to South Africa
In July, Professor Mark Kende was selected to coordinate a delegation of law professionals to South Africa through the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program.
AUGUST
Drake Law alumna inducted into Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame
Marsha Ternus, LW’77, former chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame on Aug. 22.
Professor receives Global Citizenship Award
Professor Ellen Yee was honored with the inaugural Principal Financial Group Global Citizenship Award during Drake's Fall 2015 Convocation on Aug. 28.
SEPTEMBER
Drake 3L appears on Dateline NBC
Mallory Weiser, a third-year Drake Law student, assisted prosecutors in a first-degree murder case that was spotlighted in the Sept. 11 episode of Dateline NBC.
Tracey Meares delivers 2015 Constitution Day Lecture
Tracey Meares, national expert on race relations and law enforcement, discussed policing in the 21st century at the 2015 Drake University Constitution Day Lecture on Sept. 17.
OCTOBER
Drake recognized as a best value private law school
Drake Law was ranked #16 in the 2015 Best Value Private Law Schools by The National Jurist. This marks the third year in a row Drake Law was included in the list.
Drake 2L's question aired during debate
On Oct. 13, Drake Law student Sterling Arthur Wilkins asked the first viewer question in the Democratic presidential debate on CNN.
Drake Law students selected to attend food law summit
Caitlin Andersen, Natalie Ginty, Sable Joseph, and Kelly Nuckolls were among 100 law students nationwide selected to attend the first-ever Food Law Student Leadership Summit at Harvard Law School in October.
NOVEMBER
Drake Law hosts debate spin room
On Nov. 14, Drake hosted a Democratic presidential debate on campus. Drake Law School was the site of the media “spin room,” where major news outlets broadcast live during the event.
Ag Law Center hosts conference on soil and water conservation policy
The Drake Agricultural Law Center hosted a two-day conference in November, bringing together about 200 individuals to explore ways to protect Iowa's soil and water.
DECEMBER
Drake Law alumnus becomes longest serving governor
On Dec. 14, Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad, LW'74, broke the record for longest serving governor in United States history (7,642 days in office).
