1 John 3:1, 3:16-18
1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
New International Version (NIV)
Have you ever seen love in action?  Sometimes in life, we get a front-row seat.  My friend Karl was severely mistreated by a neighbor.  She cursed him every time she saw him.  Sometimes she called the police to complain.  They told Karl not to worry.  She treated everyone that way, even her own family.  Then she received her diagnosis.  Karl’s neighbor had cancer.  Her own kids would not take her to the hospital for her treatments.  Whom could she ask?  She had burned every bridge available to her.
John had been a son of thunder back in the day.  But for three years, he had a front-row seat, too.  He saw Jesus wash the feet of his fellow disciples.  That night Jesus gave his friends the new commandment:  love one another.  Then John stood beneath the shadow of the cross when Jesus forgave those who had crucified him.  No wonder he wrote with a flourish, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.”
Legend has it that John preached into his nineties.  His friends helped him to the front of the gathering.  Then looking out at the Christians John said, “Children, let us love one another.”
Karl drove his neighbor from Bastrop to Austin for a few months while she received her treatments.  They didn’t talk much, but he wanted her to see the love of Christ in him.  Then, when the treatments were finished, she acted as if he had never helped her.  Karl didn’t help her for recognition.  As Bob Goff titled his book, “Love does.”  Well.  It does.  Look at Jesus.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for showing us your love on the cross when your son became the atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Help us to love others today.  Let us not love in words, only but in our deeds.  May someone see your love in us today, we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
Our 2022 Every Day with Jesus readings will cover the whole Bible in one year.  Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
We would love for you to join us as we read through the Bible this year. In addition, I will continue my long-standing practice of reading one Psalm a day through the year.  As we journal together this year, Highlight a verse that stands out to you, Explain what it means, Apply that truth to your life and Respond to what you’ve read with an action or prayer.
Joyfully,
Duane
