Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2017

It's hard to believe Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention Month (DVAM) 2017 is her! In an effort to highlight all of the amazing work happening around the state, and to help boost the efforts of our members and allies working to raise awareness, we've compiled DVAM social media strategies, online toolkits and resources, and a calendar of events occurring both around the state and nation. Thank you to everyone for the tremendous dedication you have to this movement, and we look forward to another great year of creating social change!

#NYDVAM

PARTICIPATING VIA SOCIAL MEDIA
Here are a few ways to use your social media presence to raise awareness about domestic violence and the impact it has on our communities, our state, and around the world.

  • Use the #NYDVAM hashtag in your social media posts to highlight the amazing work happening all over the state to build awareness and prevent domestic violence! You can follow the campaign on our Facebook and Twitter pages where we'll be highlighting the work being done by our member programs across New York State to support survivors and end domestic violence. 
  • This year, NYSCADV is participating in Allstate Foundations Purple Purse Challengean annual friendly fundraising challenge in October. We will be highlighting domestic violence awareness, prevention information and resources while raising funding for the support for critical programming that benefits the entire state.
  • Encourage friends and family members to donate to NYSCADV and your other favorite domestic violence advocacy organizations to help support our vital missions to prevent and end domestic violence.  
  • Change your social media profile and cover photos to purple ribbons and other domestic violence awareness signs, slogans, and statistics that reflect your local work.
  • Join NNEDV's #Safety4Survivors Twitter Chat on October 17th. Advocates will discuss breadth of survivors’ experiences, including ways to address & remove barriers, centering marginalized communities, building resilience, and the road to empowerment.
  • Follow and share NNEDV's annual #31in31 campaign on all your social media platforms. Each day, they'll be sharing survivor stories. Some are uplifting, some are heartbreaking; all are true and reflect the broad spectrum of experiences that survivors across the country face every single day.
  • The #ThisIsDV campaign from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) elevates the voices of survivors to help validate and name their experiences and raise awareness about the multifaceted nature of domestic violence. Follow @National DVAM and join the conversation on Twitter and Facebook at #ThisIsDV.
  • The #ImAnAdvocate from NRCDV builds upon thier 2016 #WhyICare campaign to ask: Why are you an advocate?  Follow @DVAM and join the conversation by sharing your inspiration & selfies on Twitter at #ImAnAdvocate & #DVAM2017

New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV):  Shine the Light Campaign 10th Anniversary

From skyscrapers to bridges, storefronts to shopping centers, purple lights illuminate the nights of October. People wear purple clothing while police cars and municipal vehicles display purple magnetic ribbons. National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV)

National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV)

This October, the Domestic Violence Awareness Project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) is building upon conversations from 2016 around Awareness + Action = Social Change by offering key awareness activities and action steps for propelling us forward together. This October it's time for another Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge! The Purple Purse Challenge is a fundraising campaign for charities benefiting domestic violence survivors. The campaign launches on Monday, October 2nd at 12:00 PM EDT and runs through Tuesday, October 31st at 1:59 PM EDT. The team that raises the most during the Challenge wins a $100,000 donation, second place gets $50,000; third gets $35,000; fourth gets $20,000; fifth gets $15,000; Sixth gets $10,000; Seventh gets $5,000 and, there will be weekly Bonus Challenges for charities to win up to another $115,000. The best part of the Challenge is that even if organizations don't win any of the grand prize money, they still get to keep the money raised during the campaign. Throughout the month of October Community Action of Greene County will distribute purple toothbrushes and sharing information how survivors are forced to flee at times without even a toothbrush. Help us raise awareness of the connection between pet and family violence and support Wellspring’s Safe Pet Partnership Program.
The Safe Pet Partnership Program assists victims of relationship abuse who remain in their abusive environments because they don’t want to leave their pets behind. We do this by providing a resource network of  pet “foster homes” for safe, temporary placement while the family transitions to violence-free living. Once that is achieved, the families are reunited with their pets.

Proceeds of the Pooch Parade support the Safe Pet Partnership – providing safe and loving homes for pets of those who need time to heal.
