John  19:1-3
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.  The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
New International Version (NIV)
How would we hear the story of the crucifixion, if we heard it today for the first time?  Familiarity may breed contempt.  We know this story so well, that it may no longer move us.  May God help us if we can read this and yawn.

Stories are told of people in other cultures who first witnessed the story of Jesus in a video format.  They fell in love with Jesus as they watched him love the world and set wrong things right.  Then at the crucifixion, they wept and wailed.  The violent death of our Savior overwhelmed them.

As we read John chapters 19-21 today, I pray that God will give us fresh eyes.  Why would Jesus endure so much and pay such a high price?  How dare they mock the King of the universe?  As a boy, I was moved by the story and songs about the cross, “Alas, and did my Savior bleed and did my Sovereign die?  Would he devote his sacred head for sinner such as I?  Was it for sins that I had done he groaned upon the tree?  Amazing pity.  Grace unknown and love beyond degree.”
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the sacrifice made by our Sovereign Savior.  Thank you for sending him.  Thank you for allowing him to be crucified for us.  Thank you for imputing his perfect righteousness to us so that we can be saved.  Let us never take the cross for granted, we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
