If we always knew what God knows, we would always want what God wants. Our problem is we have a point of view and God just has view . . . comprehensive, 20-20, perfect, all encompassing view.
Moses and Aaron represented the Lord to a man who thought he was God. In his arrogance, Pharaoh dismissed the Lord. I saw a T-shirt recently which said, “Underestimate me. That’ll be fun.” Pharaoh was underestimating the Lord and it was not going to be especially fun for him.
We probably should not be surprised when people who don’t know the Lord underestimate him. What is surprising is how many people who say they know God still underestimate him. Moses comes to mind. He has already encountered the Lord and come to know him by name. He has seen miracles which God gave him to get Pharaoh’s attention. Still, after Pharaoh dismissed them unceremoniously, Moses wants to give up. Already.
“Now you will see what I will do with Pharaoh,” the Lord says. God not only wants Pharaoh to see, but Moses also! “Not only will Pharaoh let my people go. He will drive them out of his land,” says the Lord. God is confident that he can change Pharaoh’s mind. In the plagues and miracles, God not only captured Pharaoh’s undivided attention, but he also revealed his power to Moses and his people. In the challenges which the Israelites would face, the signs Moses and Aaron had performed would give them confidence in God’s mighty power.
Wait before the Lord today. Watch him at work in the world around you. What is God trying to say? How have God’s past blessings in your life grown your trust in him for the future?
