Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
New International Version (NIV)
“When you are bumped you will spill what you are full of.”  On a few occasions in my life I have encountered holy servants of God.  I knew when I met Jack Gray that he was one of them.  Small in stature but great in the Kingdom, he challenged our class to read the book of Galatians every day.  So we did.  Then he stood before us, almost hidden by the lectern and said, “When you are bumped you will spill what you are full of.”

As Paul distinguished between life in the flesh and life in the Spirit, he gave a representative list of the character qualities which God produces in his people.  By his presence, the Holy Spirit fills believers full of himself.  Eventually the fruit produced in us include this marvelous list of traits.  If you ever meet a person full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, you can be sure that they are already full of the Spirit.  These come only from God.

I shudder to think of times when I was bumped by life and responded poorly.  In challenging moments I was more like the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull.  God is patient with his garden, though.  He continues to produce in us the things which will show himself to the world.  When you are bumped, and you will be bumped, you will spill.  Be full of God.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your patient gardening in our lives.  Remove the weeds of anger and greed and lust.  Let the good seed of the gospel bear fruit in us, worthy of your kingdom.  God who fills the whole universe in every way, please fill us today.  So that when we are bumped, the world sees your work in us.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
