Video: Pricing Corn Silage

Approximately 1 million acres, the equivalent to the size of Marathon County (less 1/2 a township), of corn for silage is produced in Wisconsin. When corn silage sells, the grower and dairy producer each assign values based on different goals. Both like the agreement to be simple and understandable. Have we based these agreements too much on the grain value in the past? Where does fiber digestibility fit into value calculations?
In the recent Extension Badger Insight webinar, Extension Clark & Wood County Dairy Educator Matt Lippert discusses ways to price corn silage and determine a price including these options with the pros and cons
  • Option1: 7 to 9 times the bushel price of corn
  • Option 2: Cost of production (COP) per ton per acre + 10%
  • Option 3: 1/3 to 1/4 the value of average hay

UW Nitrogen (N) Guidelines for Corn

Commonly known as “the MRTN card,” this publication summarizes the University of Wisconsin’s corn N recommendations on a single 3.5 x 11-inch card. The front of the card contains corn N recommendations based on soil characteristics, previous crop, and N-to-corn price ratio. The flipside contains an N-to-corn price ratio table along with additional guidelines for fine-tuning N application rates. Download it here.

Corn N Rate Calculator

The Corn N Rate app calculates a nitrogen fertilizer rate for your field using University of Wisconsin recommendations designed to assist Wisconsin producers in selecting an N rate that improves profitability when N and corn prices fluctuate. Maximum return to N (MRTN) is the N rate that will be most profitable for a particular N:Corn ratio. The MRTN rate is the LARGE number expressed in lbs N/acre (total to apply) including N in starter. Below that number is the range of N rates that result in profitability within $1/acre of the MRTN rate.
