Video: Pricing Corn Silage
Approximately 1 million acres, the equivalent to the size of Marathon County (less 1/2 a township), of corn for silage is produced in Wisconsin. When corn silage sells, the grower and dairy producer each assign values based on different goals. Both like the agreement to be simple and understandable. Have we based these agreements too much on the grain value in the past? Where does fiber digestibility fit into value calculations?
In the recent Extension Badger Insight webinar, Extension Clark & Wood County Dairy Educator Matt Lippert discusses ways to price corn silage and determine a price including these options with the pros and cons
- Option1: 7 to 9 times the bushel price of corn
- Option 2: Cost of production (COP) per ton per acre + 10%
- Option 3: 1/3 to 1/4 the value of average hay
