TEACHING TIPS: Communication, Well-Being, and Student Contact
|
As we approach Spring Break, students are stressed; we're stressed; and constructive communication may be becoming more difficult. The following are several options for communicating with students depending on your comfort level and goals.
|
-
The Reflect App, available on your MS365 account, lets you set up check-ins with students about how they're feeling that day, but also easily poll students about a host of other subjects.
-
If it fits into your class subject matter, incorporate information about burnout and its prevention into your class - which provides an opportunity to ask students how they're feeling about their own well-being and to take stock of such. The University of Waterloo Pharmacy Program has provided information and research about their activity, "Check-In".
-
As stress levels rise in the middle of the semester, email communication can be more difficult. Inside Higher Ed has insights and advice on compassionate student emails and Higher Ed Jobs discusses how to write emails with clarity and kindness.

Course Recording Syllabus Language
|
We have just added to the UNCG Sample Syllabus sample language for "Recording within a Course." This language provides the instructor with options for allowing or constraining students recording courses for personal use, while addressing students with formal accommodations through OARS.
|
"You may not audio or video record this course without my express written permission or that of the Office Accessibility Resources & Services (OARS). If you have requested the use of assistive technology as an accommodation and completed the OARS Welcome Form, please let me know if you plan to record this course. Remember that authorized student-initiated recordings must be used only for your learning and education, while you are enrolled in this course. If you make a recording available to anyone, in any fashion, including posting online or through other media without my express written consent, the case will be forwarded to the Office of Students Rights & Responsibilities as a violation of the Student Code of Conduct."

Course Accessibility Checklists and Support
Updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires that all campus digital content (public facing websites, digital course materials, digital campus resources – including campus trainings) meet the WCAG 2.1 (level A and level AA) standards for accessibility by spring 2026.
UNCG has several campus resources that you can utilize now to make the transition easier, with more tools and resources on the way.
| Drop-In Adjunct Support Hour
The UTLC is pleased to announce that it will be offering a drop-in support hour for adjunct instructors every Tuesday from 12pm - 1pm (Teams link) started March 18th through the beginning of May. This time is meant to be drop-in for questions or just connecting with the UTLC and other adjunct instructors.
This time may not fit in your schedule! Please don't forget that consultations are available to all UNCG faculty and staff with teaching responsibilities, and we're also available at utlc@uncg.edu.

TEACHING EVALUATION PILOT
UNCG is administering a pilot of a new teaching evaluation system. The pilot and the current system (Class Climate) will run in parallel for two years; when the Class Climate contract expires, administration will make a decision about which or neither system to keep.
Anthology uses research validated common questions, along with offering units the chance to add custom questions. It’s mobile friendly, which may increase response rates. You can see more information here: Evaluation of Teaching Pilot Project.pptx
