KUIA continues World Cup momentum |

The World Cup may be nearing an end, but its impact in Lawrence continues to grow. KU International Affairs is helping sustain the connections forged during Algeria's time in the region, including new conversations between Sister Cities Lawrence and the City of Biskra, as well as ongoing collaborative initiatives in consultation with U.S. Embassy personnel based in Algiers in areas like English language education and emergency preparedness. Discussions also extend to a possible KU-University of Biskra umbrella agreement that could focus on arid‑region agriculture, aquifer management, oasis urbanism, and sustainable architecture.
To prepare for and celebrate the World Cup, units across KU played essential roles in cultural training, community language and translation support, and multilingual outreach throughout Lawrence and Kansas City. KU units including Kansas African Studies Center, African and African‑American Studies, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, KU language departments (Spanish & Portuguese; French, Francophone & Italian; Slavic & Germanic Languages), the Spencer Museum of Art, and the KU Natural History Museum delivered Title IX modules, translation assistance, public programming, and cross‑cultural training for local organizations and businesses.
While both the KU community and local organizations were eager to learn more about all four countries whose teams set up base camps in the area (Algeria, Argentina, England, and the Netherlands), Algeria drew particular attention because KU and the city of Lawrence served as the official base camp for the Algerian men’s national team. Their presence in the community created an immediate need for deeper cultural understanding, practical guidance, and locally relevant information. That heightened interest gave faculty and staff in KUIA—along with experts across multiple KU units—valuable opportunities to share knowledge, engage directly with residents, and showcase KU’s deep international and intercultural communications capacities.
