Reflections from Director Newcomer

As Director of Trachtenberg School, I especially enjoy seeing the many ways my colleagues contribute to our profession. Earlier in October I was at the NASPAA Conference in Flagstaff, AZ, as were many of my colleagues, and we are highly involved in the governance of the organization. Lori Brainard serves on COPRA, and she is also leading the Section on Doctoral Education. Domonic Bearfield had served as chair of COPRA, and he was just elected to the NASPAA Executive Council. Mary Tschihart is co-lead of the Section on Nonprofit Management. I am co-lead of the search for a new NASPAA Executive Director with Rosemary O'Leary this fall, and I serve on the NASPAA Finance Committee.
At the Awards Luncheon I was especially pleased that our research star, Sanjay Pandey, won the William Duncombe Award for Mentoring, our outstanding student, Emma Northcott, was selected as a Staats Emerging Scholar, and my colleague Rachel Emas won a spotlight award for her article in the American Journal of Public Affairs Education (JPAE).
Our faculty also presented research on especially salient topics such as AI (Mary Tschirhart), and how to address Misinformation and Disinformation in our curricula that my colleague, Kyle Farmbry and I discussed.
This fall on campus we are also highlighting the need to celebrate our outstanding civil service leaders with our 76th Arthur Flemming Awards Ceremony. It is especially poignant to celebrate the accomplishments of these impactful leaders when our federal government is closed down, and most of the winners are working without pay.
