“What will you be when you grow up?” the pastor asked the children in Sunday School. One little girl sighed, “Tired!” Sounds like she has been listening to somebody. Remember when you were young, bullet-proof and invincible? My travel and preaching schedule last week was not unlike what I did 15 years ago. It felt a bit different though. Isaiah writes to people who have grown weary of waiting on God. He says, even youth and young people grow tired and weary. Sometimes we hear of a young person collapsing with exhaustion. How do we replenish our strength?
“But those who hope in the Lord . . .” Remember these words? In one of the best known promises of the Old Testament, Isaiah says that God strengthens us when we wait. What if God is working in our waiting? As we hope in him God renews us and strengthens us. God has grace for all gears.
We can soar on wings like eagles. At a graveside for Charlie Klutts this week at the VA National Cemetery here in Houston, a hawk took off just as we began to open God’s word.
We can run without getting weary. During an injury-induced hiatus from running, I received a gift of books written by Meb Keflezighi. Meb is one of the premier marathoners in the world, representing the U.S. in the Rio Olympics at the age of 41. His story inspires us not to give up.
We can walk without fainting. For every stage of life, God gives grace. God never gets tired of renewing our strength. So let us put all of our hope in God today!
