John 8:31-32
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
New International Version (NIV)
When told that a famous but notorious person had been one of his students, a professor said, “He attended my classes but he was never one of my students.”  How do we know if we are really Jesus’ disciples?   Disciples are learners who emulate their master.  As Stradivarius taught his students through “elbow learning,” as they  stood by his side and felt the texture of the wood, so Jesus invites his disciples to walk behind him and learn from him.
One sign that we are really Jesus’ disciples is that we hold to his teaching.  Across our country today Christian leaders are reinterpreting the scriptural teaching to make it conform with the social customs of our day.  As Jesus’ disciples we are not in a position that permits us to jettison his teachings to redefine sin or make others more comfortable.
Jesus, who embodied truth, always tells us the truth.  His truth does not imprison us with arbitrary commandments.  Jesus’ truth sets us free to live as God always wanted us to.  Obeying Jesus does not make us his disciples but it demonstrates that we have become his disciples.  So Jesus asked, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord and do not do what I have taught you?”  Good question!   Covenant with me today:  we will hold to Jesus’ teachings and know the truth until God sets us free to live the truth!
Pray with me:
Father, help us to walk closely to Jesus today.  We pray that you would help us to hold firmly to his teachings and translate them into our lives.  Reveal your truth in us and set us free, we pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
