Israel faced a huge problem. The problem was named Goliath. Goliath, the Philistine, offered to fight the champion of Israel in a winner-takes-all battle. King Saul and the Israelites wanted no part of Goliath. So they cowered in their tents.
Enter David. His father sent him on a supply mission to take cheese to his brothers who were on the front line of the battle. When David arrived, he witnessed the giant intimidating Israel. For David, who had stood in God’s presence in deep worship, the whole scenario was unthinkable. How could an enemy of Israel publicly defy God without facing consequences?
David’s greatest strength was his history with God. David didn’t know Goliath, but he did know God on a first-hand basis. We are often experts about the problems we face. But we need to be experts in knowing God. Some things are impossible for us, but all things are possible with God.
“The Lord will rescue me.” David knew God’s name. Saul said, “The Lord be with you.” The Lord was with David. He called upon the name of the Lord and he was saved.
Actually, the battle was not a fair fight. Goliath entered the battle convinced of his own military prowess. David entered the battle knowing God could not and would not fail. Goliath really didn’t stand a chance – against God. When we pray we are not informing God about our problems. We are introducing our problems to our God.
