Gladys Aylward led the orphans in her care across a mountain to safety. At one point she was tempted to give up. One of the children reminded Gladys that Moses, too, faced obstacles as he led the people. "But I am not Moses," Gladys explained.
Jesus' disciples were also tempted to give up after his crucifixion. They confessed they had lost hope. Concealing his identity, Jesus taught two of them on a long walk. Using our Old Testament, he told them his own story of redemption. When he broke bread, they recognized him and remembered how their hearts burned when he spoke to them.
We must not be surprised if our challenges here lead us to deep dependence on the risen Lord. In all of scripture we find the one story of redemption which leads us to hope. One of the orphans answered Gladys, "of course you are not Moses. But God is still God." Yes, he is. Hold on to hope!
