Walsh University Leadership Attends Inaugural Catholic Education Summit |
Walsh University's leadership team recently attended the first-ever Cardinal Newman Society Summit held in Houston, Texas from June 15–17, 2024. The summit brought together representatives from 23 of the nation's top Catholic colleges and universities recommended by the Newman Guide for their commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition and character formation. Out of 244 degree-granting Catholic institutions in the United States, only 23 schools currently hold the prestigious Newman Guide recommendation for their unwavering fidelity to Catholic teaching and values. As one of these exemplary institutions, Walsh University participated in the groundbreaking summit alongside esteemed Catholic education leaders and experts.
Over the two-and-a-half-day conference, attendees engaged in thoughtful discussions on strengthening collaboration among faithful Catholic colleges, upholding academic freedom within a Catholic context, and promoting the unique value proposition of an authentically Catholic education in forming students intellectually, spiritually and morally for lives of purpose and service.
"The Cardinal Newman Society Summit provided an invaluable opportunity for Walsh University to unite with our peer institutions in advancing the crucial mission of Catholic higher education," said Dr. Tim Collins, President at Walsh University. "By sharing best practices and strategizing together, we are better equipped to provide transformative educational experiences grounded in truth, virtue and the rich Catholic tradition."

National PTSD Awareness Day, June 27 |
As we approach National PTSD Awareness Day on Thursday, June 27, remember that not all scars can be seen. Approximately 11% to 20% of U.S. military veterans experience PTSD, facing daily challenges due to past traumas. To support them, we can educate ourselves about PTSD, advocate for better mental health services, and offer a listening ear to veterans in our communities. Encouraging them to seek professional help and reducing the stigma around mental health issues are crucial steps in providing the care they deserve. Since its founding in 1960, Walsh has been a military-friendly school, and as a member of the Yellow Ribbon Program with designations as a Purple Star campus and Military Friendly School®, Walsh’s Center for Veteran Affairs fully supports our veterans and their educational needs.

The chapter discusses the use of experiential learning in the form of a design thinking workshop during a conference to encourage attendees to think critically about food systems and the challenges of food sustainability, particularly those related to food insecurity and how they can be addressed.
