| Funding for Dissertation Research

Are you a current PhD student who wants to conduct research for your dissertation or other projects? This session will review funding for domestic and international fieldwork expenses, short-term and long-term research stays, and other expenses, including travel and accommodations, field equipment, document reproduction, participation incentives, and dependent support (ex. spouses and children). Now is the time to start planning for research trips commencing in Summer 2026 or later.

The Hertog Foundation offers several highly competitive and selective educational programs for outstanding individuals who seek to influence the intellectual, civic, and political life of the United States. Join the UChicagoGRAD Parenting Community and the Graduate Administrative Services team for a presentation on financial wellness and resources for young families at UChicago and around Hyde Park. Topics covered will include tips on budgeting as a couple, planning for childcare expenses, financial literacy for parents and kids, and local and University services you may not have heard about, including help finding affordable childcare, navigating housing options, and answering your insurance or other benefits questions.

| Presentation Incubator

The Presentation Incubator is a supportive space for students to workshop presentations-in-progress and share strategies with their fellow research communicators. At monthly meetings, participants will present partial or full talks, pitch ideas, and discuss special topics related to presentation best practices. UChicagoGRAD will provide constructive feedback and facilitate conversation. This event is open to graduate students and postdocs in all disciplines; students completing practice fields for the Research Communication Credential are especially encouraged to attend.

Graduate Council is hosting a University of Chicago Night gameday experience at the United Center for the Chicago Blackhawks vs. Columbus Blue Jackets. Tickets are limited and include upper-level seating plus a UChicago x Blackhawks hat. Graduate Council’s winter flagship event returns Saturday, February 21 at Joy District Chicago. Tickets are limited and will be released in three rounds via Eventbrite. Admission includes a full venue buyout, open bar access (wine, beer, soft drinks), catering, a DJ, and professional photography. The event is open to UChicago graduate students; all attendees must be 21+ with valid legal ID. Ticket drops (5:00 p.m.):

“Japan Twang! The Third” ft. Sato Michiyoshi

Japan Twang! is an hour-long performance of the modern Japanese musical style “Tsugaru-jamisen” by musician Sato Michiyoshi. Tsugaru-jamisen is an improvisatory and often highly technical musical style performed on a Japanese three-stringed spike lute called a shamisen.

China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) Graduate Student Delegation: March 14-22, 2026
Application deadline: Wednesday, February 4
Join a group of ~20 UChicago graduate students to explore China and engage with Chinese leaders through visits to political, business, technological, and cultural organizations. Participants are responsible for paying their own airfare, travel insurance, overweight baggage, visa fee, and spending money. CUSEF covers hotel accommodations, most meals, and transportation costs within China. Selected applicants will be required to submit a 500-word reflection paper and a two-minute video after the trip. Eligibility: full-time UChicago graduate students who are interested in China and have never visited.
