UChicago partners with Sunshine Enterprises to support neighborhood-based entrepreneurs


On April 29, the University celebrated the first anniversary of its UChicago Local initiative by announcing a new partnership with Woodlawn-based Sunshine Gospel Ministries’ Sunshine Enterprises, which provides business education and coaching specifically tailored to small, neighborhood-based entrepreneurs. Read more

Civil rights march in Selma inspires Chicago Theological Seminary conference

“Sankofa,” a word in the Akan language of Ghana meaning "to go back and get it," is often represented as a mythical bird reaching its neck to retrieve an egg from its back. Invoking this symbol--as representation of retrieving knowledge and wisdom from the pastin order to move toward the future--framed a panel discussion on the state of the civil rights movement 50 years after the march in Selma, Ala. Read more

University of Chicago Police Department to create community advisory committee


Following an extensive community process that included discussions with local residents, elected officials and stakeholders across campus, the University of Chicago is taking significant steps to enhance the transparency of the activities of the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD). The University also will streamline online access to law enforcement information that is already public. In addition, UCPD is establishing a community advisory committee to help the department strengthen its relationship with local residents on a range of safety issues. Partner Spotlight: Skills for Chicagoland's Future
When Hyde Park resident Kevin Roberson was hospitalized for more than a month at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 2013, he was impressed by the care and attention he received. Having
been laid off from a 14-year job in law enforcement earlier that
year, Roberson also concluded that the hospital would be a great place to work.

Celebratory event to recognize the achievements of this year's graduates of the Collegiate Scholars Program and Office of Special Programs-College Prep, and the contributions of the UChicago students who participated in the Neighborhood Schools Program this academic year. Each program will present awards to their respective students, as well as UChicago faculty and partners who have supported the programs. The featured speaker at the event will be Geoffrey Aladro, a former NSP student who was named 2015’s Miami-Dade Teacher of the Year in February.
