Stark Community Foundation created Immediate Impact Alerts to provide you with all the need-to-know information about our community’s greatest needs as well as a way to effectively and immediately respond.

Today's alert is focused on replacing the fire alarm system in the Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill that serves 60,000+ residents annually.

The Need

The Ken Weber Community Campus at Goodwill, located in downtown Canton, is a one-stop social services center that houses over 20 nonprofits under one roofEstablished in 2009 by Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, the centrally-located campus allows agencies to maintain low operating costs by sharing services and space, but more importantly, residents can access critical services without ever leaving the building. One bus pass can provide a person in need with prescriptions, food, counseling, a computer, job training and more.
Originally built in 1971, the 84,000 square-foot Community Campus building now faces a pressing safety issue: the fire alarm system’s control panel is reaching its end of life and malfunctions frequently causing false alarms.
Although Goodwill made significant renovations to the building in 2009, the fire alarm system was not upgraded at that time. Goodwill has found temporary workarounds to ensure a functioning system, but these are not long-term solutions. A comprehensive evaluation of the fire alarm system determined that the system must be replaced to ensure the safety of its 60,000+ annual visitors to the Community Campus and also secure this public building for future growth.

The Response

The total cost to replace the fire alarm system is $100,000. Due to the urgency and importance of the project, Goodwill is committed to contributing 25% of the total project cost, leaving a $75,000 gap in funding.
