The College of Public Service at Tennessee State University
Welcome!
As you might have heard, Tennessee State University's Department of Public Administration was awarded an ICMA Student Chapter in February of 2017 by the International City/County Management Association (please visit their website to learn more).
This student chapter was initiated as part of a broader effort to foster greater student awareness of opportunities for local government employment and research. The goals of this ICMA Student Chapters are to introduce and integrate TSU graduate students into local government and the management profession, and to familiarize students with ICMA members, ICMA resources, and the ICMA Code of Ethics. With the awarding of a Student Chapter, TSU's students in the Department of Public Adminsitration can secure a free Academic Membership, which means they can access a wealth of resources that only come with an expensive membership for non-students. If you're interested in joining, please follow this link to access the instructions for how to get your FREE academic membership.
The ICMA Student Chapter at Tennessee State University is overseen by three Chapter Officials:
  • Student Chapter President - Jim Conner (MPA Student)
  • Student Chapter Mentor - Eric Stuckey (City Adminsitrator, Franklin, TN)
  • Student Chapter Faculty Advisory - Dr. Anthony Campbell (Assistant Professor)
You're Invited!
The ICMA Student Chapter did outreach during the Spring semester, whereby the Chapter Officials visisted different MPA classes and spoke about local government, ICMA, and the goals of the Student Chapter. One of the goals we expressed during those visits, which was enthusiastically received by students, is the provision of networking events with guest speakers. Therefore, we're excited to announce that the first ICMA Student Chapter event will be held on Thursday, June 1 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Goodwill Corporate Headquarters (937 Herman Street, Nashville, TN 37208).
For this first event, we've invited Louis "Jody" Baltz, City Administrator of Tullahoma, TN, to be our guest speaker. City Administrator Baltz is highly regarded local government manager in Tennessee, and he's also an alumnus of TSU's MPA program. He will share his public service story, as well as offer advice for how and why individuals pursue employment in local government. In addition to our guest speaker, the Department of Public Administration will be celebrating important successes over the past year. A key element of this event will be the opportunity to see former classmates/professors, and meet fellow public service enthusiasts. After the formal event has concluded, attendees are invited to join colleagues, friends, and DPA faculty for dining, drinks, and mingling at a nearby restaurant (location TBA).
We're excited to host this event, we're excited to host one of DPA's many notable alums as a guest speaker, and we're excited to have you attend this event.
If you're able to attend, please RSVP via this google form.
If you have any questions about the event, please contact Dr. Anthony Campbell at mcampb13@tnstate.edu
