Harry's Corner
This and That
Friends of Elysian, who do a phenomenal job of encouraging donations, had, as two of their opportunities at the gala, “Lunch with the Principal” and “Principal for a Day.”  Following the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words (see below), here is report on these two events:
Many thanks to the Malibu Diner for donating the lunch to the children.
PARCC Testing is ongoing.  Grades four and six have completed their testing.  Grades three and five take the test this week and grades seven and eight next week.  This is the first time we are taking the test in our new building.  I am glad to report that our internet is working well.  The only technical glitch that occurred was when the State computer system broke down.  Fortunately, we were still able to test on a slightly delayed basis.
Conferences are winding down.  These are an opportunity for you to communicate with your child’s teacher in order to get an in-depth report on your child’s progress.  It is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns that you may have.  Our teaching staff spends a great deal of time preparing for these conferences, with the goal of providing a true picture of how each child functions—both academically and socially—in the classroom.  They deserve a huge thank you!

ARE YOU RETURNING?

Notices went out last week asking families if they plan to remain at Elysian next year.  If you have not already done so, please fill out this form - one per family - and send it into the office.

We would like all responses by May 9th.  Thank you!

Dear Elysian Families,  We are in the midst of planning for the next school year and need to know your plans.
All Elysian students are guaranteed a spot next year, as are siblings (space permitting).
If you tell us there’s a chance you might not return, we’ll hold your child’s place until you make a final decision.  This information enables us to encourage wait-listed families to “hang on” since there's a chance a space might open up.  In this way, you help us achieve full enrollment for the next school year.
We appreciate your answering in an honest and timely fashion.
  • Complete the form, below, and return it to your child’s teacher or e-mail susan.gilbertson@ecsnj.org.
  • If you have more than one child, please fill out one form only but include information about both children.
  • Please include any in-coming siblings on the form as well.

Rugby News

Elysian's elementary rugby club participated in an eight-team rugby tournament on Sunday, April 24th at Chelsea Waterside Park in NYC. Our club of eleven 4th and 5th graders played great team rugby, taking home 1st place in the Plate division!

Congratulations to Mason Fischer and Gavin Rutledge who were both recognized for their outstanding sportsmanship by coaches on opposing clubs.  Also, a special shout out to a few of our rookie sensations, Nico Kaplan-Muller, Michelle Gozdek and Eashan Amin who all  played key roles in helping our club.

ON SATURDAY, APRIL 30, Hoboken’s Mile Square Theatre will host three performances of  “Circus Minimus: One-Man Circus-In-a-Suitcase” to benefit Elysian Charter School, Hoboken Charter School, Hoboken Dual Language Charter School (HoLa) and the theatre’s own education scholarship fund.
SO WHAT IS “CIRCUS MINIMUS: ONE-MAN CIRCUS-IN-A-SUITCASE”?
“From the suitcase of the multi-talented Kevin O’Keefe, an entire circus emerges: tent, band, lights, and a collection of comedic circus characters he inhabits. Included are a boisterous ringmaster, officious usher, glamorous “magician to the stars,” and even an entire family of juggling acrobats. However, the most important performers emerge from the audience. Each performance becomes a dialogue between the characters and the audience—a light-hearted collaboration.” Here’s a link to a short video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDsIhmXRKPs

Information About Class Trips/ORGS ONLINE
Effective immediately, class trips that incur a fee of $25 or less can only be paid for BY CASH OR CHECK (payable to Elysian Charter School).  We will NOT be posting trips with fees of $25.00 or under on ORGS ONLINE any longer.   Many of you have expressed concern over the $4.00 surcharge when paying for trips online, so this will no longer be a factor when paying for those less costly trips.  It will also make it easier for teachers to track trip payments and be less of a burden on parents to remember to log on to pay.  When returning a permission slip to your child's teacher, please remember to attach the cash or check payment. Thank you.
