Welcome to HDFS Buzz, the newsletter of the Texas Tech University Department of Human Development and Family Studies! As we begin the new academic year, we look forward to furthering our departmental growth. Early Head Start received its designation as the newest center on campus. Learn more about the impact that the Center for Early Head Start is making in the story below.

This summer the Child Development Research Center hosted the annual STEAM Camp, where campers discovered their love for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Our team continues to make a global impact around the world—see Dr. Shine’s work with educators and students in Ethiopia.  

We are glad to see our alumni family improving the lives of others in their fulfilling careers. We celebrate the accomplishments of our students, staff, and faculty with the excitement of fall in the air. Texas Tech's HDFS Team Makes Global Impact on the Future of Ethiopian Educators
Executive Director of the Center for Early Head Start Stephanie Shine, Ph.D. led a team to Ethiopia this summer to share constructive teaching skills with local educators. Courses on constructivist methods of teaching young children, supporting children in becoming divergent thinkers and learning to be problem solvers while being actively involved in hands-on learning experiences.

Researcher Wins National Science Foundation CAREER Awards
Zhe Wang, an assistant professor in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies within the College of Human Sciences, is using her award to research how anxiety about mathematics interacts with math learning over time.
Early Head Start Program Designated as Center
Early Head Start Program Designated as Center
Texas Tech University's Early Head Start program has been designated as the campus's newest center, following approval from the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.

As an initiative of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, the center exists to promote areas of child care, parent education, health and well-being and family sustainability.

Freshman Claims Rare Honor With Big Heart, Hard Work
Elizabeth Walker, an incoming freshman in the Honors College, majoring in Human Development and Family Studies as a segue to nursing school, is one of only 442 high school students from around the United States and 29 from Texas to earn the prestigious 2018 Congressional Award Gold Medal.

  • The Christine DeVitt and Helen DeVitt Jones Child Development Research Center hosted STEAM Camp for kindergarten through 5th-grade children July 9-20. Campers experienced the educational fun of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. View Photos >

  • Drs. Michael McCarty and Stephanie Shine, in conjunction with Lubbock ISD, organized “Pave the Way to PreK” camp, an initiative of East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood. The school readiness camp was held at Ervin Elementary. View Photos >
  • HDFS graduate student Jessica Blume presented "Joint Attention in Early Social Communication: Behavioral Measures and Critical Elements" at the Texas Autism Research Conference in Austin, Texas in June. This research is done in collaboration with Dr. Ann Mastergeorge.

Alumna Receives Volunteer Supervisor of the Year at Cook Children's Hospital
Rachel Meharg Castillo is a Certified Child Life Specialist at Cook Children's Medical Center. She was nominated by one of the volunteers under her supervision, and then chosen by a panel of Cook Children's employees. Rachel said that it was incredibly humbling to be honored for her hard work.

2016 Human Development and Family Studies alumnus John Krueger is a U.S. Army veteran who first considered going to Texas Tech University when his duty stations included bases in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and North Texas. His life path led him to begin a policing career in 1997.

Recent Graduate Credits HDFS Department's Role In Occupational Therapy School Acceptance
Casey's interest in occupational therapy sparked at a young age after volunteering at a pediatric outpatient clinic in San Antonio. Entering college, she knew what she wanted and focused on what steps it was going to take to get there. She was determined to graduate from the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program in just three years before (OT) school.

Alumna Serves Families Through Role As House Manager For Ronald McDonald House Charities Of The Southwest
2014 Human Development and Family Studies alumna Elise Rascoe builds relationships with families and provides them with needs during their stay at the Ronal McDonald House. The organization provides families with lodging, meals, transportation, laundry facilities and more to ensure that they are provided with a safe home free of financial burdens as long as their child is receiving medical care.
Early Childhood Major, Kathryn Cude, As Student Of The Month For Summer 2018
Kathryn says that she chose a major in early childhood education because of her love for working with children and the desire to support student development. She continues to describe her major is unique because of the accessibility for future educators to gain a skill set that enhances the work of educators.
