  3. Develop reciprocity and cooperation among all online students.
  4. Use both synchronous and asynchronous activities to promote activity diversity.
  5. Use a variety of large group, small group and individual learning experiences.
  6. Instructor responses are both requested and expected by online students.
  7. Think before you write.
  8. Respect diverse talents and ways of learning.
  9. Highlight learner support opportunities in course materials.
  10. Make learner resources available at multiple locations within the online course.
Managing Technology - Online Teaching Best Practices
  1. Be innovative in your teaching with technology.
  2. Integrate new technologies into your online course slowly by setting up mini “pilot” lessons.
  3. Utilize only safe and secure technology in your online course.
  4. Plan for the unplanned.
  5. Know both the tool and its intended purpose before employing it.
  6. Practice good file management (e.g., organization, storage) throughout the entire course offering.
  7. Direct students' “public” questions to an established discussion topic; private matters to the instructor’s email account.
  8. Use multiple browsers in partnership with the learning management system.
  9. Warn students of forthcoming, public, social networking activities in advance of participating.
  10. Take advantage of all learning management system training (e.g., Learn@UW-Stout) whenever available.

Doug Stevens
Director, Stout Online
I have worked for UW-Stout since September 2003, prior to that at UW-Eau Claire for 13 ½ years.
I am the director of Stout Online and provide leadership for the support of customized instruction learning services, as well as online courses and programs offered by the university. I have worked in the field of continuing and online education for more than 24 years. I have a master’s degree in education and a bachelor’s degree in vocational rehabilitation, both from Stout, and earned both degrees as an adult, nontraditional student, balancing family, work and school responsibilities.
As a part of Stout Online, I thoroughly enjoy the staff and the job variety. In addition, the collaboration with faculty/staff, departments and offices on campus is a joy and imperative to the success of our programs.
Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife of 39+ years, two children, three grandchildren, Irish setter and cat, on a lake in northern Wisconsin.
What are your life goals?
  1. To be the kind of person my kids and grandkids want to be.
  2. To be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
  3. Attend all of my grandchildren's weddings.
  4. Take my wife on her dream trip to Italy.
  5. Fish 300 days in one calendar year.
If you could give the world one piece of advice, what would it be?
Relax and slow down, embrace the journey. Enjoy what you are given today. None of us know how many tomorrows we have.
